I’ve just measured my Gold Note PH-10 phono and it is connected between signal ground (RCA) and power ground (IEC inlet) so “Chassis”. That should mean my NSS 333 should theoretically be set to Floating to follow the “only one path to ground” theory?
I also have an ethernet switch with grounded power cord connection (230V). Will ground pass from NSS 333 all the way to safety ground that way too? How can I measure this?
The chassis/floating switch is to select a single ground for the Naim signal (-0v) circuit, and to switch that connection off if the system already has a ground, e.g. a CDP.
Your ethernet ( if the cable is STP and has grounded shield at the RJ45 plug ) is a connection to the case chassis earth and is not part of the signal circuit
A phono stage is just grounding the arm.
However, it’s not a disaster to have it incorrect, one way will have a touch more noise than the other, let your ears tell you.
Well I’ll be surprised if the Ethernet shield tab in the streamer is grounded to the chassis… as there is no switch to defeat it… and earth loops in Ethernet shields can cause issues elsewhere.
Easy way to test… unplug your switch and streamer and all other Ethernet leads… if the earth pin on on the streamer and switch mains leads reads zero or just a few ohms… then there is an Ethernet ground connection between switch and streamer, and you might need a shield earth breaker in the Ethernet lead for optimum technical performance.
The actual Ethernet connectors are galvanically isolated and balanced, so they are not an issue.
Ethernet grounding can cause many many issues and unless you absolutely are controlling the grounding schema in the network clients and network components are not recommended at both ends of the lead. An Ethernet earth break coupler is effective and dealing with this issue should it occur.
To be honest, I can also get a bit confused with ground or floating. I also have an Aria connected with a ground wire to my NAC252 and the Aria itself connected to the 252 in phono analogue. My NDX2 is connected with DIN to the 252. Should it then theoretically be set to floating or “default” as it is called on the NDX2…?
Yes if you can be sure you have not created an earth loop.
BTW with Ethernet cables there is no concept of ‘source”. There are send pairs in both directions on modern duplex connections, and I think with most streamers, the streamer is often the source in terms of network flow initiation depending on the application used.
Provided you don’t have another source with the signal earth connected (such as a Naim CD player) then set it to ground. The Aria floats the mains earth.
