Music and gear, the two are linked and are the purpose of our presence.
Why the term audiophile is felt as repulsive by so many ? It makes no sense to me.
Overtime I undestood that too, electrical noise does have a huge impact and you have to take care of it if you want to get the best results.
I don’t see it as repulsive, perhaps a little trivial.
Someone mentioned a limerick ….
“There was a man from Thame
Who bought a system from Naim
In his pursuit of the very best
His whole life he could not rest
Finally sent him insane”
Yes, but people don’t stop repeating « I am listening to music, not to my system « . Or « No, I am not an audiophile, I am a music lover « . It’s like being an audiophile is a shame.
I am an audiophile, I like gear, upgrades, pursuit a more realistic musical experience, I am amazed by some hifi technology….But I am a music lover in the same time.
It’s called virtue signalling…
I am an audiophile, I play music and listen to it, but quite often I listen to my system too. Sometimes I even dance to the music I’m playing, and the system that’s reproducing it. No cognitive dissonance in my game.
We agree.
I think that limerick needs a dose of the much fabled Naim PRAT!
There was an old man from Ealing
He had reached the Naim ceiling
He wanted PRAT
But couldn’t hear that
So took himself to Boots to check his hearing
Could be worse. I bought a Linn system and sold my SN3 and cd player. I still come to this site and I still miss the Naim.
I’ve spent about £12k and I’m not happy.
For the past 40 years I’ve been buying and selling hi-fi equipment, I’ve owned and listened to dozens of pieces, but since I got my current system I haven’t wanted to change anything, I listen to music with pleasure, that’s all that matters!
There was a young man from Japan
Whose limericks would never seem to scan
When told they don’t go
He said that I know
It probably has something to do with fact that whenever I write a limerick I try to fit as many words into the last line as I possibly can ![]()
Look up and watch Darko’s video “Audiophiles are the worst”. It explains many things…
I would add that this hobby has its fair share of people with some forms of OCD.
There is a thread on this forum about filling solidsteel stands or not. A University study of all things was done to answer the question (I guess this is a more pressing matter for university research than a cure for cancer…). Yet despite that, the thread has over 100 posts!
That is a neurotic level of obsession over a nothing burger.
Or, it’s a few interested people trying something out just out of curiosity to see what happens, without harming anyone.
Sad to hear this, @Jase70. I suppose getting back to Naim is difficult in the short term?

I must admit I can’t see why some get obsessed with just recorded music… there is more to audio replay than just music… there is drama, plays, sound poetry, spoken word… all really come to life with a good audio replay system… why limit yourself to hearing others play music…
And other than snap shots in time with certain recordings, I often find the best music experience is the music one makes oneself or in a group. That is truly musically satisfying… and to be honest is a world away typically from hearing recorded music and doesn’t have to cost a fortune…
Just saying
Hi @ClaudeP
I think I’d take too much of a hit financially to swap now but I’d rather have Naim. I bought a Linn edition hub, power amp etc so I’m pretty much stuck now.
I’ve had 72/HiCap/180 for about the last 35 years. Still sounds fantastic. ![]()
It’s just interest in high fidelity, how it works, how it improves or not…what are the technical reasons…It’s audiophilia, nothing wrong with that. I guess you sometimes wonder « what do I do in this forum ? « , not?
If that’s a recent Selekt Edition, you’re not really stuck. For example, you could swap the power amp cartridges for line level cartridges and run those into a Naim power amp.
BTW your profile just lists an SN3.
