Forgotten Groups 2 - Jethro Tull

I got the Analogue Productions 45 RPM vinyl remaster of Stand Up this past weekend. It sounds really fantastic. They knocked this one out of the park. And it’s mastered by Kevin Gray, one of the best – if not THE best – in the business (he does all the Tone Poet jazz reissues). I highly recommend it. I hope they do Benefit too (I have the UHQR of Aqualung).

I came late to Jethro Tull, the only song I really knew growing up was from Christmas Albums - Solstice Bells! As with lots of my musical tastes, they have matured over time and I have worked back through various groups. I particularly love what I would call the more Folk Rock Albums Songs from the Wood & Heavy Horses, I also own the 50th Anniversary set and a few others, definitely now one of my favorite groups alongside Fairport Convention for this type of music.

I finally picked up Aqualung : Steven Wilson mix on vinyl from an independent record store out in Montreal. What a great pressing and I really like the mix.

My favourite two JT albums. Bought them as a teenager when they were first released. Still listening to both!

I saw Tull at a few gigs around London & SE in the late 60’s, some of the best were at Chalk Farm (Round House, Middle Earth)
A strange band, scruffy individual, standing on one leg, a flute that he couldn’t play in those days, all a bit gimmicky and no real genre, neither rock blues or folk, whatever all good listening/watching.

I started to take notice a bit more when he/they became a bit more settled.
My limited album collection, all now replaced with 24 bit streaming.
Heavy Horses, Aqualung, Songs from the Wood, Thick as a Brick, Storm Watch & Passion Play

My Jethro Tull Christmas Album (2003 CD) finally turned up over the weekend, cost me just over £20 used but looking at various auction and music sites, this is a real bargain! I have been after this album for over a year now, for some reason, seems very difficult to obtain at a reasonable price. Very good production and JT & Christmas just seem to go together. Has anyone tried their latest release ?

Yes,Zealot Gene,it’s excellent.

Try the Steven Wilson remasters of the Tull albums. I’m sure they’d sound excellent on your LP12

Not half as good as the original pressings, my dear friend!:sunglasses:

I have those too but they can be hard to get in good condition…thus the SW remasters recommendation…

I’d rather have any battered original copy than any SW’s remasters anytime. But that’s just me.

All great recommendations by all above, but I would also add Bursting Out. It’s a double live album which personally I think is terrific! The SQ (mine is an original press), the selection of songs and how well they are played, the Ian Anderson wit and just the overall live atmosphere from start to finish… I do like a good live album though!

Great call. That album pretty faithfully reproduces their live act from the late seventies.

I first became aware of them when BBC TV ran a live feed of a show from Madison Square Gardens in autumn '78 and got see them live at Hammersmith Odeon around a year later. Magnificent act.

Yes I saw that show too. Even my dad saw it and like it, which is saying something!

That is remarkable, yes. Confronted with rock bands, dads of that era would usually snort “is that a boy or a girl?” or exclaim “look at that lot , they’re full of drugs!”.

Usually they weren’t far wrong on the latter, of course.

I’m not going to admonish you for neglecting the Tull all these years, but I will recommend one of their most fun recordings.
Live; Bursting Out!
Recorded in Bern, Switzerland 1978, during the European leg of the Heavy Horses tour.

Despite Claude’s intro, I’m pretty sure the album was recorded in several locations across Europe. In one of the tracks, I think you can hear Ian welcoming “our American friends”.
