Free/Avantgarde Jazz

Other names are used. It surely is a genre that needs some ‘getting used’ to. I mentioned a few albums over on the jazz thread.

It is one section of jazz (not the only one) I particularly love. Believe it or not, the cacophony many say it is actually relaxes me. I go further and say it sometimes almost hypnotises me, making time and present blur when I close my eyes. I can feel rhythm when there is seemingly none and no, no hallucinogenic drugs involved (unlike those that play, often).

It is also a decent system tester, especially but not exclusively for transients, both macro and small. On a ‘non resolving’ system it can sound all of one. It can do this on a decent system too but usually there is space between performers if recorded well and yes, some of it is recorded good.

Nobody I personally know would listen to anything like it and Mrs Winniethefoo calls it ‘elephant noises’.

For anyone not ‘into’ this, perhaps try listening to a free jazz record or five. Not loud but hear them all the way through. Read liner notes on the performer/s. They are almost always very skilled musicians that could/can easily switch to more conventional tunes. Do that a few times when you feel relaxed and not on edge! Perhaps you grow to like it like I did. I hope so but even if you don’t, you have exposed yourself to a category of music that takes skill, even if it not always seems so and you can say you’ve tried. Who knows, in a few years your musical tastes may expand to this :slightly_smiling_face:

I could easily recommend a few but feel you need to choose this yourself if intrigued. There is always the Jazz music thread which features one or two. Thanks

Very sorry, this should have gone into the Music Room. Perhaps it can be moved?

Duly moved for you…

Get The Blessing.
All is Yes. 2008.

I recall the album being described as sounding like a full band playing and falling down the stairs.

So glad that I’m not the only one enjoying thus stuff. Again, Mrs JZ isn’t a fan, but fortunately a local record shop (in Hastings) has a regularly updating selection. Spending far too much money, but loving the journey.

Been listening to free, avant-garde jazz/free improvisation for a couple of years maybe and have grown to love it. I almost hardly ever listen to anything else these days. I’ve found the Free Jazz Blog an invaluable source of information and recommendations for new (and old) albums of this genre and their annual albums of the year always provide me with hours of new and incredible music to listen to. Highly recommended for anyone into this genre. Here’s a link The Free Jazz Collective

i once included an albert aylor track on my demo playlist - the dealer was not impressed: “it’s just noise” - but as you mentioned it can show up inadequate equipment ruthlessly. to be fair he had the playlist on repeat for 24 hours in his demo room above the shop before the demo so he may just have reached peak aylor

My tastes stretch to the outer reaches of Jazz, but I have not immerged myself in the really Free stuff. I need a minimum of melody.

Steve Lehman and Steve Coleman were two artists who shifted my tastes somewhat away from more mainstream Jazz.
