From Bookshelf to Fraim

Hi everyone,
I’m thinking about getting a Naim Fraim to organise my 8 components and I’ve got a couple of newbie questions – hoping you can help me out!

My setup includes: Linn Sondek, ND5 XS2, Lector CDP, tape deck, NAP 300 DR, NAC 252 DR. Since there are 8 pieces, I was planning on two racks side by side – two columns with 4 shelves each, as I’ve often seen in posts here.

First question: Is it okay (and possible) to put the preamp and power amp in one column and their power supplies in the other? Are the standard cables (I think they’re called Burndy cables?) long enough for that?

Second question: To keep the cost down a bit, could I put both power supplies on the bottom base of one rack, and the power amp and streamer on the other base, using one medium-height shelf (180 mm) and just one standard-height shelf (105 mm)? That way I’d only need 6 shelves instead of 8. But I’m not sure if there are any downsides – like weight limits for the glass base or interference issues.

For reference, 6 of the 8 pieces are currently arranged like this (other two aside).

Thanks a lot for any advice!

There are many ways to do this. The standard way is to indeed have power supplies on one side and the more sensitive things on the other. Vertical separation should help so with three heights to choose from you can go for medium size instead of the smaller one to give more room around each component. Fraim lite vs full fraim will save a decent amount of money. Most people here will advise you to have one component per shelf and not stack them on a level. I had my TT power supply and my headphone amp on a single shelf next to each other for a while which I felt was fine. Fraim is pretty expensive so if you ask the dealer they will help with the best layout for you.

I really like the way this looks and integrates. It may not be to Naim ‘standards’ but hey.

I dislike racks and personally never heard a difference between them or any detriment without one but acknowledge others do.

You may want to use the search feature and type in ‘Fraim’ since there are 50+ threads available to review.

A lot of knowledge regarding the NAIM product is available by using the search function.

I reality like it too; but the room is really small (little less than 9m2)… I tried in a larger room and the sound is a lot more clear and better balanced so I decided to move all the setup (Harbeth C7ES), that’s why…
