I don’t have experience with Powerlines but can somehow attest to the information from Naim that the fuse in UK plugs is a negative, as mentioned in @Blackbird 's post. I didn’t try or compare a lot, hence in my limited experience I found that mains power cables terminated in US plugs generally sound better than those which are terminated with UK plugs which come with fuses. It’s not a exactly apples to apples as the cable, plugs and price are all different between the cables. FWIW I’ve never found a noticeable or significant difference comparing mains power cables terminated with UK plugs. Again, caveat is I didn’t compare a lot, just two or three cables, all cheap ones below £150 which include the Chord purple cable. Perhaps the costlier ones may bring some difference.
That’s exactly what I did, albeit with the std Naim lead — I changed both the IEC and the Shuko connectors to the ones used in EU version of the PL, FI-28R and FI-38R respectively. Initially I changed the IEC plug only and the difference was immediate and very noticeable, the floating system implementation plays major part in the overall improvement the PL brings as a whole IMO. Later on I changed and the Shuko/Male connector and I could hardly hear any difference, maybe it did improve in the long term, but as we get used to the sound with time, probably I did not notice it, it brings peace of mind nevertheless.
Knowing what the IEC brings, one would expect that the other connector brings the same level of improvement, but at the end for me it is mostly the IEC that has a perceivable effect on the SQ.
Over time I did this with all the cables in my system, started with the one on the nDAc first, so I was experiencing an improvement with each modification. In terms of cost, each of the connectors is around 130EUR, about the same amount in USD I guess, roughly a third of the cost of the full fat PL, not bad considering the positive effect it has on the SQ.
I’m confused, doesn’t the EU Powerline use the Naim IEC?
Powerline yes, but the he was talking about the standard powercords, not the Powerline.
The Powerline, also the EU version, does not use the FI-38R IEC. It uses Naim’s own decoupling IEC.
I must have assumed it based on the Furutech Shuko connector the PL uses, my bad. I also assume the technology used in both Furutech and Naim IEC connectors is similar or even identical, based on their commercial descriptions.
As far as online the Naim IEC is fundamentally different in the way it decouples while the Furutech IEC doesn’t. This is the only unique part of the powerline as the cable itself and the schuko connector are nothing special.
Sorry for the confusion, this must be:
The Powerline does not use the FI-28 IEC
Nice looking cable.
Thank you. I hope it works out fine. I have taken some big risks in the past. Most have worked out but a few have been very costly mistakes.
It takes a while for my bank account and my brain to overcome the losses so I hope this is a good call. I will be candid with my findings with these cables, rest assured if these aren’t a good match with Naim, I’ll report it.
Here we go! I’m hoping to have the cables installed in two hours. I’ll now run them so they are in the same shape and distance - instead of one coiled up (left speaker) and the other lying straight (right speaker is further away from the amp).
This is going to be quite challenging as I’ve bought cheap cable risers to lift the cable off the floor- the weight and stiffness of the cable is quite a bit more than the NAC A5. It’s like wrestling with a snake.

I guess it won’t be a completely fair comparison to the NAC A5 as the cable risers will play their part. It’s just that the jacket of the cable was so lovely I couldn’t let it get dirty by resting it on the floor.
First impressions are very positive. There is a clear improvement in the presentation. It’s more noticeable than when I had the Super Lumina SC on demo. Having said that my system has also had many upgrades since I heard the SL.
I won’t say anything else right now, new toy blah blah blah.
Good to hear, I would imagine like anything else from Furutech that’s rhodium plated, those connectors will take some serious time to run in. Keep us in the loop ![]()
Yes I have many Furutech cables so I’m familiar with the long burn in.
I’ve already noticed that as the midrange tone is off. The detail is very impressive though. So many passages in songs make complete sense now.
What is the purpose of the big plastic part?
It’s just the cable splitter
Furutech cables will show a glimpse of brilliance during the burn-in process even though they might sound “weird” or wrong during the first 100 hours or so, in my experience with the power cable and plugs. I would reserve comment until the DSS-4.1 speaker cables are fully burn-in. Nevertheless, based on my experience with NAC A5 and Chord Signature XL, it’s a very different sound signature between the two. The difference in sound quality between the NAC A5 and Epic is closer and more subtle. If I were to briefly describe the difference, it’s smeared and less detailed vs. clear, sharp and pin-point with increased capability of reproducing the nuance or musical message in the music. Hence, I would expect the DSS-4.1 to sound noticeably different from the NAC A5 which you currently have in the system.
I would be interested to hear your impressions once the DSS-4.1 is all loosened up. I have blown my budget going for a new amp so an alternative (and costly) speaker cable will have to wait.
