Our Xbox one x broke last week so we got it replaced by a series x. Added Anno 117 to play with my 9 year old to trigger his interest in history.

So the Nintendo Switch doesn’t count then?

Recently played three short games after a long stint immersed in gigantic games.

  • Stray
  • Little Nightmares
  • Little Nightmares II

All three have something in common in that they elevate the concept of game as a serious work of art to a new level (no pun intended).

With Stray the concept of a highly intelligent stray cat in the decayed remnants of the Kowloon walled city long after humanity had gone extinct is as bonkers as it is beautiful. Of course the walled city has since been razed to the ground for redevelopment but I remember the real one well from my younger days. The visuals and atmosphere is highly emotive. Very much a linear progression and not terribly difficult but no less fun for it and completely suitable for young children though the subtext about our ultimate irrelevance as a species will be lost on them.

Little Nightmares (both of them) though brings the artform to a standard that is fairly astounding. There are things technically superior and executed but I am talking about the true art of the experience crafted here. Whether it’s the stunning score from Norwegian experimental composer Tobias Lilja or the completely unsuitable theme for a game (the vicious cycle of child abuse - yeah like that’s obvious game material), much of the game taps into irrational but recognisable childhood fears and makes them real. Both titles are like a great movie and after completion you just can’t get the experience out of your head. The only way my son could exorcise those demons was to perform Tobias Lilja’s theme for Little Nightmares II as his piano recital. Even that piece of music can creep you out. Played in the dark through the big AV setup you will sleeping with the lights on afterwards

Long-time gamer here …

I have PS5 (disc version), XBOX X (Disc version) and Wii.

Why so many? Just habit. The only reason I have the XBox is to play 360 games, having been through 2 XBox 360s, and the X will play their games.

I keep the Wii to replay Resident Evil 4 once a year. Much nicer game with the Wii controller, IMO. I didn’t particularly enjoy the remake, and much prefer the original.

At the moment I’m replaying Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores. Those games are superb.

I’m another long-time gamer, started with the Commodore 64 back in the '80s, then had an Amiga 500 for a while before switching to PC and then in 2017 to Playstation because I really wanted to play Horizon Zero Dawn.

And in case anyone wants a great game with a fantastic soundtrack and haven’t already played it, I can wholeheartedly recommend Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
