GIRO D'ITALIA 2025 🇼đŸ‡č

A terrific stage with a cracking finish today. They deserve a rest day after that. The gravel was challenging to say the least.

Don’t get me wrong, Wout van Aert is a great guy off the bike, and phenomenal good all rounder on it, but that last few kilometres run-in to the finish didn’t look good with him limpet stuck to Del Toro’s rear wheel and not contributing at all, and just before the finish riding around to steal the win.
Wheel sucking tactics used to be frowned upon in the olden days

Isaac Del Toro finished 2nd in Stage 7, and now another 2nd in Stage 9, however he shows fantastic form for a 21 year old (the 3rd youngest in this tour).
UAE have a strong team with 2nd place on GC Juan Ayuso also winning a Maglia Rose stage earlier in this tour, it will be interesting to see which of these riders gets the team support.

I take your point but wasn’t Del Toro, due to his age perhaps, a little naive? His only tactic seemed to be keep going/more of the same?

I wondered if he thought he would just ride away from Wout on that final steep climb before the finish, given that Wout appeared to be struggling to keep his wheel on the previous climb. It was a great day’s racing for sure.

Del Toro (UAE) would have known he was in for a shout of getting the Maglia Rosa, and in that opportunity every second counts to get over the line. Meanwhile van Aert (Visa) may have been under team orders to not assist his rival in gaining GC time, but all i’m saying is the wheel-sucking tactics didn’t look good, or the theatrical dramatics of lying on the ground after to show how tired he was after feeling guilty about sneaker-thieving a win :1st_place_medal:

But it’s great the Maglia Rosa is being won by different riders/teams on a such a frequent basis, this suggests an unpredictable outcome.

PrimoĆŸ Roglič was unlucky to get delayed with a puncture, and then a crash, cost him about 2 minutes. He’s also without his super-domestique, Jai Hindley (DNF stage 6) so has his work cut out now, if Roglič wins this tour i will take my hat off to him.

The dynamics of Stage 8 caused an interesting shuffle up on GC, to include two Brit brother-twins in the top ten, and the Italian national hero, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) who scored a 3rd place in the stage and gaining 5th place on GC :italy:

Arguably they both got what they wanted then & the stage win would have been a bonus for Del Toro? Wasn’t that Van Aert’s first win in sometime following serious injury? I just saw an incredibly tired, emotional stage winner rather than the gamesmanship you saw.

It was hailed as van Aert’s 50th professional win, he took a risk with the wheel-sucking that close and for such a distance, could have easily got another injury if those wheels rubbed up against each other the wrong way. I did wonder if Wout’s bracers had gotten caught in De Toro’s handlebars (?) it was so close.

I expect Del Toro had resigned himself to having to do all the work, not much he could do in the circumstance of someone like van Aert on your back, and certainly doesn’t have the sprinting capability of van Aert either.

I think my view is between both of yours @Debs and @twofifty. Wout, whilst wanting to win had to hold in mind that his team leader’s chances of winning the GC could be damaged by him assisting in creating too bigger gap. Against this, Isaac wanted to get as much time as possible. I think both did this to the best of their abilities.

Stage 10 : Lucca - Pisa ( 28.6km ) / ITT (Individual Time Trial)

Stage 10 is the final of the two Giro 2025 time trials, this one being 28.6 km, and about twice as long of the first.
Both UAE team mates Ayuso and Del Toro are fairly expert at time trialing, so no change expected there and the Maglia Rose will most probably remain with Del Toro for Stage 11. However only 31 seconds separate the next 7 competitors between 3rd to 9th so the results should cause a few GC positional changes in the top 10.

Twin brother rivalry: Simon was only 3 seconds quicker than Adam in the Stage 2 ITT.
This is their return match.

Who will actually win the time trial stage (?)

PrimoĆŸ Roglič vs Joshua Tarling

Unexpected stage win for Daan Hoole, lucky to get his ride in early before the worse of the rain arrived, however he did fairly and squarely get 7 seconds on Josh Tarling, so a well deserved win :1st_place_medal:

The GC guys who lost the most were Egan Bernal dropping out of the top ten (although his Ineos Grenadiers team mate, Thymen Arensman moves up the GC to 10th).
Richard Carapaz drops five places from 4th to 9th, and Giulio Ciccone not enjoying the wet weather drops three positions to 8th.

The overall GC winner is PrimoĆŸ Roglič moving up from 10th to 5th and lowering his time deficit over a minute, and this puts him back into serious contention for winning the 2025 Giro.

Isaac Del Toro retains the Maglia Rosa for Stage 11:

Stage 11 : Viareggio - Castelnovo ne’ Monti (186km)

The expected plan is for the sprinters to drive the start and contest the first sprint at (46km) Borgo a Mozzano before retiring to ‘the bus’ peloton and let the climbers fight it out on the 1st category Alpe San Pellegrino, although doubtful anyone will be grinning, maybe grimacing :grimacing:

The next three stages are probably sprinter finishes, so every GC team will have a plan to do something special today

It would seem Richard Carapaz got away and no one wanted to go to the front to chase
so it came down to the strongest team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
Don’t quote me but think it was McNulty and Yates that got wasted in the pursuit. Good on Carapaz for holding out, goes to show the 2019 Giro winner is still capable of taking a mountain stage win in a very classy demonstration.

:large_orange_diamond: The UAE team is very strong, quite exceptional to have four members presently in the top ten GC, and consistently finishing stages in the top ten so they are romping away with the Team Classification, and probably carry it all the way to Roma.

:blue_square: Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team) takes another 58 points to boost his lead in the KOM, still many more mountains to climb but he will be a very difficult competitor to beat.

It’s another stage win for Mads! :+1:

However, with the next two days being flat stages definitely for the herd of stampeding Sprinters, there will be skinny lightweight stage hunter climbers hungry for a win, and willing to chance it today, i predict a breakaway, and it will probably get caught
