Hauntingly beautiful songs

I’m looking at the recommendations and they are excellent. Going back to the original brief, at what point do beautiful songs become ‘hauntingly’ beautiful. What are the characteristics or is it too subjective? Some of the recommendations already given, I do find haunting.

At this point I would respectfully offer up ‘Song for a Winter’s Night’ by Gordon Lightfoot, most of Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Just Another Diamond Day’ album, ‘Spanish Ladies’ by Helena Cinto, ‘Suo Gan’, the Welsh Lullaby and while I’m thinking about Wales, their national anthem, in Welsh.

Sweetness and Light, by Lush. Was somewhat taken with singer Miki Berenyi and her gorgeous red hair at the time.

Hauntingly beautiful can mean something seen, heard or read, meaning the beauty you see in it takes on special meaning and you almost always have a physical reaction to it

I agree Welsh national anthem in Welsh by a Welsh male vocal choir visceral reaction everytime.( and I’m English!)

We’re talking about songs, of course, not classical music… I’d suggest almost anything by Leonard Cohen - Take This Waltz perhaps? Or Jacques Brel.

From my post #53.
IMO, Vivaldi’s L’hiver is the epitome and very essence of ‘hauntingly’.
