Headphone signal path

I have the regular Atom and stream hires on it. A couple of questions for the experts out there.

  1. Is the headphone amp the same as that of Nova?
  2. When you listen through the headphones what part of the amplifier is used or not used in the signal path, compared to using external speakers.

Both units I believe go through the DAC, then preamp, then on to the dedicated headphone stage amp for headphones or onto the power amp for speakers.

The Nova has a better preamp and poweramp and DAC but not sure they changed the headphone stage side at all.
