Hi Fi Mains block finally finished!

Hi this has been a long time gestating…I ran out of sockets ages ago…so built my own mains block. Nothing very fancy… consists of:
24 cable woven supply cable
16mm earth in centre of woven cable
HD henly blocks internally
6mm cables to all sockets
Star earth/supply cables all same length
Rhodium plated unswitched sockets
Thats about it really…its good and solid all tested…will hook it all up soon…phew.

Nice work :+1:

One last thing sockets on one side are inverted to allow plug cables to exit upwards…seemed like a good idea…time will tell.
Hoping this block will bring something more to my system…I keep hearing good reports about how decent mains blocks being something to Naim gear… curently I have 2 switched double sockets…one of which is a spur…

Do you supply them in different colours😉

This is going to be burried at the back of my stackeroo…not on show…

That’ll help give the music a more organic, yet earthy feel…

I will be installing it tonight about 8 o’clock if there is a huge power surge follwed by a power cut…it could be me…sorry. Any one for bacon???

That’s a nice job. It has the look of a mains block which Russs Andrews used to offer. What is the frame on which the sockets are mounted?

I made it myself from MDF … I based the design on the RA unit…its about 5mm bigger…simply because of the material thickness… The RA wiring is pretty flimsy…so I went for as bigger guage as sensibly possible…I recon I could run my cooker off this…I sould have used as more flexible earth cable 16mm is pretty solid…anyway if its anygood I will let you know…hopefully it wont make anything worse…

Have set it all up and all good…its early days yet…but bass appears faster and the sound is very relaxed…am I hearing other improvements…well I am reserving judgement my system has been switched off for a while…and I want it to fully settle in over the next few weeks…but so far very happy… :sunglasses:

Oh, a very nice block!!
My experience and comparisons have made me a long time proponent of quality components and heavy gauge, seriously wired mains blocks - and really not many offer this. E.g. even MusicWorks and the better versions of Atlas and Titan use 4mm2, while the huge majority including MCRU, Puritan, RA, most Furutech etc. use 2-2.5mm2 and even lesser wiring. MSHD Power and Chord use thicker … bus bars. Only a handful, like from Shunyata, Furutech (e-TP809) and the SOtM I use go up to 6mm2 and 8mm2 respectively.
Of course, there are other factors of design and construction in play and what you’ve done is I think a pretty special piece which gives your system the opportunity to show better its potential especially in terms of dynamics, easing space, flow and bass performance (as you point to), all of which count towards more natural sounding music.

Thanks for kind comments, I had a good session this morning…definately more relaxed and yes bass dynamics are quite a bit better…vocals and the space around them is great…I have a feeling there’s is more to come.

Looks good, and will be worthwhile of the effort.

Looks much like my Russ Andrews ‘Purifier’ Block I have had since the early 00’s.

This has a 16A IEC socket, so you can experiment with the main leads to it, and a female 16A IEC socket on the other end for expansion (used).

I use it with a High Current PowerKord, but fitted with a Wattgate W350 High Current (16A) Rhodium IEC and a Furutech UK mains plug (my Mains plug of choice) with a Synergistic Purple Fuse. Given it powering a distribution block, this is where I may upgrade to a Synergistic Master Fuse, when funds allow.

I did have to replace one of the dual sockets, as one outlet has broken internally. But I was able to purchase one of the MK based sockets and repair it. Russ Andrews did actually have the purchase on file, some 20-years on.

I believe the Russ Andrews PowerBlock is still available, but now in Signature form, and at a much greater price than my purchase.

I am pretty sure I have seen that sort of arrangement in Laboratories or similar. A near triangular cross section, with sockets on either side.

Yup. Search for ‘laboratory power sockets’.

Lots of 'em…

Thanks for the responses…yeah I looked closely at the RA … I like the shape…it makes for a compact flexible package with some room inside for some sturdy wiring. I use Evolution 500 power cords with super fuses (not inside!)…I am interested in the effect of a master fuse.
I have had a good listening session…tonight things are definately improving…sound appears more dynamic yet at the same time relaxed…strange its the best way I can put it. The sound stage also appears to be opening up…and vocals are excellent… I find it hard to believe a 13a extension can have such an effect. I assume the star earth and supply…does something the Naim amps like…

Things still improving…no so much bass now …music appears to be opening up more and better imaging…delighted…great little upgrade. If anyone wants to know what bits I used…I will put together…a parts list. :sunglasses:

Yes please - plus any building hints and tips. Looks like you have constructed a nice bit of kit :+1:.
Just for your piece of mind, my lights didn’t dim nor did we have a power cut when you first plugged it in 5 days ago :joy:

I’d be keen to have a go at making one up if you could provide a little more detail, particularly on the wiring configuration.
