HOMC into Nait50 MM section?

Hi all,

I have an Exact on my P6 in my office system that needs replacing. I put an ND7 on and it introduced some feedback issues (not putting it all on the ND7, I think there are some issues on the circuitry on that side of the house), but I didn’t have issues with the Exact. It’s a shame as the ND7 is outstanding otherwise (playing in main system). I am going to shift to something else and now planning on a Hana SH v2. I did see on the interwebz a mention that HOMC’s might not be the best into the Nait50 MM section. I had always understood MM and HOMC outputs to be essentially the same, but maybe not. Would love thoughts on this from the brain trust.

@b-lilja This was discussed yesterday in another thread. The Naim built in phono stage of the SN3 and I also believe for the Nsit50, are optimized for MM. You might want to consider a Rega ND7 or ND9 if you are using a Rega TT. Sorry about your ND7 not working out. Do you have a dealer?

Before you change carts again, have you tried putting the N50 plug and the Rega wallwart each in a different wall socket? Perhaps an easy fix, same for moving deck and amp as far apart as possible (and far away from the speakers)

I get the hum just when the P6 RCAs only are plugged in…no power to the P6. Doesn’t change when powered up. And yes I’ve tried doing different outlets. Thanks for the idea though, with the Exact I had transformer hum from a Rega io and separation of the amp and deck fixed that.

Is it a constant hum or does it change with the arm closer/further away from the spindle on the TT?

It’s constant.

@Adam1 uses the same combo.
Time to enter one the scene guys.

@The_Lecht_Rocks uses Nd7 with N50. He should help.

I also use ND7 on a P8 with Nait 50 and now with gold note ph-10. Had no such issues.

What is feedback issues?

I’m using a Hana SH with Nait 50 and it sounds wonderful. The volume is typically around the 9 or 10 o’clock mark, compared to 8 o’clock for a digital source.

To solve your hum, you probably need to ground the Nait. A wire from the ground post on the back of the amp to the earth of a mains plug should do the job.

Alternatively, do you have any other sources connected that when removed cause the hum to go away ?

I’ve seen some ground the shiny screw at the back of the Rega speed control box too.

On my former Well tempered the manual recommended a ground wire from the minus outer part of the DC jacket to the ground post of the amp. This cure hum for me on that turntable. On my P8 I have no hum except when the tone arm get close to the spindle. This problem I did not have with my Well tempered. Vinyl can be a mess indeed. I still prefer digital at my end. It just works and sound so so good in my setup.

Indeed. The quality of the digital domain, equipment and reproduction nowadays is rendering my patience with vinyl very thin…

It rarely now gets used.

Bad luck. I use prehistoric stuff, called tubes , from power to pre to phono.
I have no hiss, no hum, not the slightest, with my P10.

It’s not about luck. Rega have by purpose made their MM carts prone to humming. It’s a Rega thing. If you use MC or any other brand this specific hum doesn’t exist.

I had a tube amp the blew up. Never again. 1000V on those tubes.

I had in the past P3, P25 and P9, with MM, and all Naim system. Never had a single hum.
Maybe the Nd carts are different.

It’s been the same with i.e Exact. If you google you will find.

Not in my system, with 202, 282, Stageline, Stageline with Hicap. P9 with Exact.
