How can I stream from my internal server on to my UnitiQute using Naim Internet Radio?

I remain the proud owner of a UnitiQute bought when they first came out.

I applied the firmware update yesterday without a hitch.

I am seeking advice on how I can get it to connect to my internal icecast server.

In the vTuner days my configuration (via the web UI at url-colon-slashslash-myradio-dot-naimaudio-dot-com) was:

Enter the information for the station you would like to add.
The station will be immediately added as one of your favourites.

Station Name: MyIcecast
Desc: MPD internet radio MP3 Encoding
Logo URL:
Station URL: url-colon-slashslash-192-dot-168-dot-1-dot-222-colon-8000-slash-mpd.mp3
Location: UK
(for example, Canada, Germany, Buenos Aires)
Genre: Favourites
(for example, Classical, Dance, Rock)
Type: MP3
Bitrate: 256kb/s

Is there anyway to get Naim Inernet Radio to pick up my internal server?

Very best wishes,

Steve

Unfortunately with the new update you can’t add specific radio stations using URL’s so you can’t do this any longer.

What you are doing is unusual, can’t you use a standard UPNP server instead?

What are your audio files and where are they located?

I suggest you lookup asset (by dbpoweramp) or minimserver (both audio upnp servers) and run those, the uq will quite happily work with upnp.

Can Naim internet radio be accessed by non-Naim hardware? If so, that’s a very viable solution for the OP. If not – then not so much.

@HTemples what is the rest of your system and how is your UnitiQute connected to it?

Below is an ASCII schematic of how the system fits together. There is one large space that has ceiling speakers (as we host dance events). The NAIM components provide quality sound to 6 speakers in the ceiling and one sub in the corner. When we have a dance event the music is delivered as files direct to Qute (via the USB/iPad input) which has excellent codecs. Until recently pre and post event music was from an internal Icecast stream.

At other times the Qute was fed a stream from the internal Icecast server. Other devices can also pick up the stream (VLC; Yamaha) in other rooms of the house. The source of the stream is MPD which also stores (and makes available) the music files. MPD has multiple alternative clients to manage playlists.

In the past I have had an FM transmitter connected to the MPD server so that older devices could listen in to the playing MPD playlist. That is no longer in service as we have disposed of the older devices and now use BT speakers to our phones that pick up the MPD/Icecast stream via VLC.

I read a bit about the Icecast server and MPD, and they are just the wrong packages for Naim. Your UnitiQute wants a UPnP-based server. If you search online, I’ve seen reference to a UPnP “plug in” for MPD but I think it goes the wrong way – so that MPD can play music from a UPnP server . . . you’d need something so that MPD can serve music to a UPnP player.

There may be other work-arounds, such as something running on a raspberry pi that also runs a UPnP server package.

I think that your original question about using “Naim Internet Radio” is totally the wrong direction. Look for something that acts as a UPnP compatible server to either sit between MPD or Icecast and your Qute, or to simply add to your network. Because if the only networked device youre serving music files to is the Naim UQute, you may as well have a compatible server.

You state, “At other times the Qute was fed a stream from the internal Icecast server.” How was this accomplished? Was there a protocol supported by your server that the Qute was happy with that no longer works?

Yes. Both of my non Naim streamera also receive Naim radio.

I think he’s trying to “serve” a Naim radio stream at least if I understand his original question, however. Even if his MPD or Icecast can “receive” Naim radio, he needs a protocol it supports so that the files can be served to his Qute. I don’t think that either of his server packages directly support any that are compatible with his Qute; he needs something in the middle or a new server package.

I think icecast works like this;
You create a playlist and can add to it on the fly
Icecast generates an audio stream that you could setup as a url in vtuner.
The qute plays it; as it’s working via vtuner it just sees it as another radio station, but it’s really one you are generating yourself over the network using local files.

You should be able to bin the whole lot and just set it up via upnp.

This would be my suggestion, but some people really do want to torture themselves!
