How good are Nac A5 cables?

Great, thanks people for all your advice here. I’ve ordered a pair of Mac A5 cables used from eBay, 3.5m long. They have the Naim plugs on both ends.

Seller said to unscrew the Naim plugs at the speaker end, they’ll fit the binding posts fine that way.

New to me, but honestly its been decades since I owned a VDH cartridge.

But just now I recall I had a VDH interconnect back in the 90’s - my apology - gave it to my then brother in law.

In my experience it depends on your speakers.

Brilliant news! Just cut the Naim plugs off speaker end as they should be soldered and cut back sleeve so you have nice bare and fit to binding posts.

Will be fine. You can always solder banana plugs on or get Naim dealer to do it for you.

I think the seller means that you should unscrew the black plastic box from the plugs. You may not even need to do this, as the 19mm spacing between the two pins is used by many speaker manufacturers. I don’t know if your Kudos speakers use this standard 19mm spacing, but if not, unscrew the boxes and remove them. Just be very careful not to short the cable when the two pins are loose, as this can damage the amplifier. Don’t turn it on until the cables are connected.

Exactly what he meant yes.

I find NACA5 cable effective and is now my goto staple cable for my hifi. Being copper it works well with audio frequencies and doesn’t tend to highlight upper or lower frequencies artificially - which I personally dislike - but some like this extra excitation you get say from silver plated conductors it as it can give the impression or sense of more detail - albeit it is an aural illusion.

In short when you use copper interconnects and subjectively use well balanced stand mount speakers (in my experience, in the near or mid field) - NACA5 simply sounds so very natural with fantastic nuance, natural detail and subtle micro dynamics that exist in many recordings .. and it simply gets out of the way… it works well for me

I have the Naim plugs on both ends, they fit perfectly on my Neats. Do make sure you get the polarity correct. On my cables it’s very hard to read the arrows on the cable and the ridge on the + side is not that pronounced.

Currently using VDH CS122 Hybrid with the baby Naim. So far neither has imploded or atomised.

You are right to be careful.. but the amps are relatively robust. If there is no signal being amplified and its background hiss - if the pins briefly touch it appears ok.. this has happened many times with me over the years with different Naim amps no issue at all. So to be clear I wouldn’t recommend this at all - but dont unduly fret if it briefly happens by accident.

Also good practice to switch off the amp before plugging cables into speakers - again not the end of the world if you dont. I saw my dealer doing this once - and I haven’t fretted since.

But you are right to say the good and preferred practice is to switch off…connect and then power up…

The seller has been great with marking them for me. I will need to take the plastic covers off the plugs at speaker end as the Kudos binding posts are too wide. That’s no big thing though. Looking forward to trying them.

I use KS/1 with my Kudos X3s.
It’s what kudos are wired inside with. :+1:

With my Nait XS2 difference was night and day - switching from Chord Leyline to NAC A5 (2 x 3.5m) simply improved each and every aspect a lot.Every song sounded more detailed, more lively and clear.I listened to my exact home setup at the dealer’s showroom with other price-matching cables and none of them came close, maybe the biggest difference I ever heard being made by replacing a cable pair (the second biggest one being switching from RCA to high quality DIN 5 interconnect) Indeed it seems true - as others stated - that NAC A5 cables are electrically matched with Naim amplifiers.

Speaking from personal experience: I used to have Chord Epic speaker cables, and everything seemed fine, but when I switched to NAC A5, everything just fell into place—and since then, I haven’t even for a moment considered any other cable.

The joy of anticipation! Let us know how they sound.

NACA5 user with soldered Naim pins in my main system so I’m biased but that said providing you use a similar specced speaker cable (ie KS1) I can’t see your amplifier having an issue but how they sound with your speakers and personal taste is something only you can make a decision on not anyone here.
If possible given your speakers are Kudos I’d definitely try KS1, if possible, from a local dealer on demo to hopefully settle the matter from your perspective.
Good luck and enjoy the fine tuning!

For the money, NAC A5 sound excellent. From a practicality and ease-of-use perspective, they are horrendous.
