Those burndies are a bit porky. Not enough exercise clearly.
BTW nice guitar - I much prefer them with the block inlays.

They would doubtless expect a good Naim dealer to be able to advise and install the kit to obtain best performance. Like any set up of audio kit, knowledge and experience here are invaluable. Itās how the dealer earns their margin.
Naim, as any other brand, will not advertise himself by saying that itās complicated to get it work optimally their components. They have more interest in saying that all you have to do is connect and forget.
Commercially speaking that you need to massage the burndys, separate the power supplies, by a 4k rack, add an audiophile switch and replace the stock power cables by powerlines would be a kind of commercial suicide.
Re feeling bumps in the roadā¦I remember having a tuned XR2i ā¦ with fully tricked suspensionā¦fabulous handeling and you could feel every ripple or mark in the road. I changed to a Golf Mk4 GTTDi smooth and soggyā¦a barge in the corners. I then changed to new BMW 320i wowā¦the ride was smoothā¦but the handling was amazingā¦better than festerā¦so you can have your cake and eat itā¦
Up to a point, put that bmw on a track and you will find out very quickly that its not up to the job
Dear Richard,
With all due respect, this is not an excuse for poor or incomplete or lack of detail in support documentation/manuals for such products. Personally from my professional background iām afraid these aspects i find lacking to say the least. With regards dealers i would not rely on some because unless you are surrounded by good ones in the UK then you would need other means.
Regards,
Mark
But do they in all my years not a single dealer has massaged the burndies, just plugged them straight in
I wanted to avoid the obvious remark that some dealers might be happy to do the minimum as far as installation is concerned. I suppose if we are all silly enough to plug and play then they are largely happy to go along with that
Just saying it how i have found it to be and this is not just one dealer, but 4 i think over the years.
But the difference if any will be so small that there is no chance your going to tell, by the time you have unplugged it and messed about, you have 0 chance remembering exactly what it was before and then you just fool yourself its better, as it must be because i have just spent 15 minutes doing it.
But maybe it is better but your never know for sure will you, plus you canāt do a instant switch test so you have atleast a chance to hear any difference.
But as said if you feel you need too, then do it as why not, but i wouldnāt expect to hear any difference after it, also inside the unit after the burndy plug are they massaged before cable tieing together?
The role of the dealer is of course very important and itās good to point that out.
But even with the best will in the world and full knowledge of these things it is just not possible to keep all cables off the floor/wall/each other etc. My system sounds great and better than other 500 systems I have heard despite sub-optimal cable management. Maybe I am lucky, maybe it could be much better or maybe cable management is not that critical?
A proper setup and understanding of the environment in which it will go is often not shown to the level i would expect. Afterall these aspects take time which in turn eats into margins
Some also never buy new via a retailer
Absolutelyā¦and I am sure an M5 would be even more amazing. But as a compromise between comfort and handlingā¦the 3 series is an amazing compromiseā¦its just an analogyā¦guys on here have amazing carsā¦so it must seem pretty patheticā¦sorry.
Thatās true, so itās good that Naim have provided this forum too for Naim owners, dealers, staff etcā¦ to share their knowledge on how to get the best from their Naim kit.
Back in 90ās an XR2i 1.8 8v cvh with 140bhp was pretty hotā¦0 to 60 in six secondsā¦not bad. I installed rs suspensionā¦koni shocks, polybushes, lowered uprated springs and power steering 2.5 turns lock to lockā¦awesomeā¦but not comfortableā¦unlike the 2009 ā¦ 3 series which handled better and had a fab ride.
Didnāt mean it like that, its just that there arenāt many road going cars that are equally at home on track, that can do a full track day at speed and then drive home. Then be ok to do it all again tomorrow without having to strip bits and replace
Agree even more ā¦ that Fester I had was sort of going towards track and it was horrible for rideā¦ My ND555 with 2 supplies seems pretty tollerant of less than good digitalā¦files ie mp3.
Indeed and Iāve tried all sorts of alternatives, but none of them get me the live sound that Naim does. Several that have been favoured by members posting here who have āmoved onā have left me mystified about what they heard in them to appeal. Most of them exhibit typical āhigh-endā lush, smooth, anodyne treacle detail with little rhythmic dynamism, raw instrumental texture or cohesion - a pretty enough experience, but aeons away from Naim or a live performance.
Sometimes it reminds me of the old Harley tagline: āIf I have to explain, you wouldnāt understandā.
Whilst I donāt claim to be an expert Iāve always viewed the cable fondling and dressing as the icing on the cake, fine tuning. Of course a Burndy twisted and bent, for example, could have a much bigger impact. Itās a thick heavy cable and itās easy to see why such things matter over a thinner more flexible cable.
But Iām taking about a carefully set up system making the best of an environment which isnāt ideal versus a meticulously set up system where all potentially detrimental environmental factors are eliminated. Iād like to think the difference is no more than 5-10%. I can live without it as the price of converting my living room into a listening room is too big a price to pay. If I had a dedicated listening room then things would be different, Iād be all in.
I for one appreciate the Naim philosophy and quirks, eccentricity even. And I hope it never changes in this ever increasingly homogenised world.
I think itās simpler than that. Some people think that because a dac gives more details itās better. If they can hear the background singer breathing, they are astonished and amazed.
