How it looks / not how it sounds

By “premium” finish, I was thinking of some companies where they start with an enclosure that not only weighs more but also costs more than what is inside. You know… carved from solid billet , and inside is a transformer and two transistors (L).

I’m curious how you view the old yamaha silver components and receivers. I.E. cr-820 receiver or even the humongous cr-2020.Meters and buttons galore, but to me very good looking

Surely a timeless classic…

To me, naff. Typical Japanese product of its time, one I wouldn’t give a second look if I saw on display. Funny how we’re all different!

Hey IB, here are some japanese stuff that you will perhaps like more:

kondo monoblocs, luxman 700 cu pre, audionote ongaku integrated, balabo dac.

There are a lot of good looking, sexy, beautiful, handsome (Naim) HiFi out there but there is this one brand where I am hypnotised by the build, looks and its exquisite knobs that are Luxman amps. I love to see one in the flesh. Most probably most of the ‘knobs’ and the alluring decibel meters will never in practice be used. Just from the pics online the amp just looks simply impeccable, and it is what it is in build.

I do like some looks from the less is more school..

Frenchrooster, of those the Audionote and Balabo look OK to me, but not the Kondo or Luxman.

Not sure that less is more fits the TT, which is clearly a double disk player, presumably for quadraphonic play without complex encoding/decoding.
As for third photo, it looks like a laboratory top pan balance!

47 lab flatfish cd player?

I have always fancied the DNM amps. If I’d had more available readies at the time I’m sure I’d have bought one. The reviews were always very positive.

…so long as you didn’t read Hifi Review.

Do you mean HFN&RR, because I’m sure I used to read that at the time, but maybe not. I never heard the amplifiers, just always fancied them and I’m sure I read positive reviews - somewhere!

Hifi review was the “flat-earth” bible, Chris Frankland and Malcolm Steward. I seem to remember they did a comparison of the NAD3020 and a Krell KSA100(?), and slagged the Krell off and said buy the NAD.

To be fair though, the CF led mafia didn’t like much outside of Glasgow or Salisbury. Great fun at the time though and Noel Keywood always did a great job with the technical section of the mag.

Just have to put some pictures of a fanatic hifi-friend’s listening room.
Much Sonus Faber and…:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:.

That is an eye watering expensive amount of Accuphase gear in one room.

Wow!

Although, thinking about it a bit, I reckon hoovering’s going to be a bit tricky.
