How to connect Yamaha RX A870 receiver handling the surround channels, with a Supernait 3 handling the front stereo pair

I have recently acquired a Supernait 3 amplifier. As an integrated amp in my Hi-Fi, it works perfectly well. I would also like to utilise the SN3 to power the front stereo pair within my AV setup - where the Yamaha receiver handles everything else, except the front stereo pair.

My understanding is that, as my main stereo speakers, these are connected directly into the SN3. The AV Bypass switch is set to ‘on’, and the AV in DIN connection from the SN3 goes into the ‘Front Stereo’ input on the Pre Out section of the receiver.

When I turn on the receiver, the volume pot light extinguishes, and I’m expecting the SN3 to provide the front left & right channels in the mix - with the receiver handling the overall volume. Right now, the front stereo pair aren’t contributing at all though!

This must be user error on my part, but I cannot fathom where I’ve gone wrong. Maybe I need to set up the Yamaha from scratch? I’m out of ideas though after pouring over the manual this afternoon. Any insights are very welcome.

Hi there,

I have never used a Supernait 3, but having looked at the manual what you have done sounds correct to me, including engaging the AV bypass switch on the rear panel. This leads me to suspect an issue with your 2xRCA-Naim 5 pin din cable. If I were you I would be tempted to try the same cable from the front L/R pre-out on the Yamaha into a different input on the Supernait - perhaps the tuner input. Select tuner on the NAIT, turn the Nait up to 12 o’clock volume, play something on the Yamaha and then gradually raise the volume on the Yamaha to see if the front channels kick in.

If that doesn’t work it looks like the Supernait has regular RCA phono inputs too, so I would try a 2xRCA phono-2xRCA phono cable between the pre-amp out sockets on the Yamaha and the RCA phono AV input on the Supernait.

I’m sure somebody more familiar with either product than me will be along in a while with an answer, but it’s the middle of the night in the UK right now and that’s the best I can come up with!

Good luck and I hope you get it working!

I suspect this is the issue, an RCA to DIN lead would require the correct wiring on the DIN - it needs to be the source to pre variation. A search of the forum may reveal the answer. Otherwise try RCA to RCA.

Many thanks to you both. I will investigate both options you’ve suggested and see how it goes. :folded_hands:

Hi All,

Thanks again for your input chaps. Ultimately, I changed nothing at all, except amending the connection from DIN on the SN3, to RCA to RCA on both ends. On checking the AV system again, it worked perfectly. Great stuff!

Happy Holidays!
