Hum from Aux2

I am attempting to add an LP12,Superline,SupercapDR to an existing 252,300 setup. The amp and preamp are fine via CD source. I have gone through the input mapping exercise on the 252 selecting 6 for Aux 2 phono inputs. The cable from supercap to 252 is a 4 pin Hiline to RCA.

Ground is hooked up to Superline, BNC connectors are connected I believe correctly. R 453 z plug is installed.
When Aux 2 button is selected, I only hear humming, no sound from LP12.

Thanks in advance for guidance.

It sounds like you need to program your pre-amp to switch from DIN to RCA on Aux 2, which is covered in the NAC 252 owner’s manual. The only other possible input you can use with an RCA is the CD input, but it may also need to be programmed on your pre-amp. Even though they are always available on the rear panel, the Naim pre-amps are normally set for DIN use on those two inputs.
Good luck,

Bruce

Hi Bruce. It’s Jay. My system is standing great. Harry moved things from Auto Standby to instant on when he was here system more stable and sounds better it is now always on sorry for the hijack

Hi Bruce,

The Aux 2 input has been mapped to the phono inputs on back.

If supercap is plugged in and 4pin din/RCA is connected to 252 it hums regardless if burndy is connected to Superline. Actually still hums if Supercap is plugged in and turned off.

Issue seems to be either the cable is not correct, or the socket chosen on Supercap is wrong. The socket used is the one adjacent to the Burndy socket.

Hi CSL-

Do you have another 4 PIN DIN equipped cable handy? Naim made a special version of the normal grey source interconnect with 4 PIN DIN > 5 PIN DIN, which would give you the option of using one of your DIN equipped inputs. As far as the Supercap goes, any of the four PIN DIN outputs should work. When Naim fans discuss the “right or wrong” outputs to be used on a Supercap, these are relatively small differences. From the sounds of your description, you have been using the “correct output.” With the pre-amp muted, if you don’t have any alternative cables you could at least try yours on another of the Supercap outputs. Make sure to be gentle with the Hi-Line cable, as they are more fragile than some other high performance cables.

None of the outputs should hum, per se, but as you may know, hum can be caused by other factors such as whether the Supercap is on the same circuit as the other Naim components, or how your turntable is grounded, etc. Even one loose connection can create extra noise on a cartridge or the tone-arm cables, etc.

Good luck,

Bruce

Hi CSL-

Sorry, I did not read your comments about the Supercap humming even while the Superline is not connected to it. Naim diagnostics are not always easy, especially if you do not have extra Naim products at home or extra Naim cables. You may want to seek out help from a local Naim dealer, if you have one in your area.

If you do have an extra 5 PIN SNAIC, you could bypass the Supercap entirely and power the Superline directly from your pre-amp. You would have to return the Aux 2 programming to the DIN socket on your pre-amp, and use the lower of the two 5 PIN DIN sockets on your NAC 252, which is the only one which carries power from the pre-amp to a Naim phono stage. It may or may not have a plastic cap installed on it, which a NAC 252 would have, when new. If you have a Stageline phono stage, the same test could be done, if the Superline is suspect. If you have a Hi-Cap of any generation, you would be able to rewire either Naim phono stage to an outboard Naim power supply, to see if everything works and isolate the problem at the Supercap.

The LP 12 is another whole kettle of fish, which I will not attempt to cover, suffice it to say that a good local hands on dealer can be of enormous help in matters like this.

Good luck,

Bruce

Thanks for taking the time with your replies, Bruce. I had pretty much narrowed it down to the 4pin/RCA cable I was trying to use between Supercap and 252. This had been given to me many years ago and had yet to be used in my system. Shoutout to the guys at Hawthorne in Seattle for loaning me a Din4/Din5 cable to troubleshoot with. LP12 working beautifully now. also shoutout to Ron Paternoster for building the beautiful deck.
