Humming UnitiQute 2

Well you won’t get much extra welly from a NAP100 to be honest. The beauty of the UQ2 is the one beautiful box. A 100, even biamped with the UQ2, will still be an amp of roughly similar power driving two bass loads. It’s not really worth it.

I’ve had mine for 12 years and use it nearly every weekday.

One thing that’s not been mentioned, and probably wont help but worth a try for the sake of 30 seconds effort…

.. the position of the ground switch on the rear of the unit - it should be set to ‘chassis’ unless you have another earthed component connected to the UQ2. But do try switching between floating and chassis positions on the switch.

you can still download the user manual and quick start guide for the Naim website btw, if you dont have them in printed form already..

Great to know, thanks!

Yes, got a copy of the manual and tried the earthing thing pretty early on in the process.

The position of the earthing switch never can affect a hum that comes from the Naim unit itself, whereas it very likely can help if the hum is coming from the loudspeakers connected to the Naim unit.

Correct, but at this stage anything simple is worth a try

You may need a DC Blocker.

DG…

Just to confirm that we would be unable to replace the transformer these days, so there would be little we could do to reduce the hum, other than fitting an extra foam isolating pad between the existing transformer & the chassis. The effectiveness of which, would be limited and variable depending on the severity of the hum.

Both my NAP250s hummed like anything, two iFI DC Blockers virtually stopped all the humming with no detrimental effect to the SQ.

But that assumes it’s offset. It could easily be other things and even those if blockers are not exactly cheap.

I have one onpckin’ around in a drawer somewhere. I can’t even remember why I bought it now.

True, they are not cheap, but if it works then they are good value.

The poster has tried many things, but not this.

Also if you get one from Amazon or similar, then just return it if it doesn’t work.

Nothing ventured, nothing lost at the end of the day

To the kind commenters mentioning some sort of mains filtering device, I bought an AudioLab DC Block and returned it as it did nothing.

I can actually feel quite a pronounced vibration on the case, even after slightly loosening the screw that attaches the toroid to the inner chassis.

I’m now in touch with Mr Tech Guy / Resolute AV to see what they can determine and, dare I hope, remedy!

Cheers

Superbly helpful information, thank you, @NeilS
