Ian Rankin

I spotted this on the BBC website when browsing the net at lunchtime.

I remember his reviews in Hi-Fi Review magazine and spotted what looked like a Linn Kan lurking in one of the pictures in the BBC News article

A quick Google turned up this article.

Ian Rankin fondly recounts his early career as a staff writer for ‘Hi-Fi Review’ magazine.

Worth a read :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve seen a photo in his flat with an LP12 sitting on the floor.

Use to love the series and I think all LP12 owners have a little bit of Rebus on them.

James - interesting article, thanks for that! Hi-Fi Review and then Audiophile magazine were my favourites back in the day so this was a nice trip down memory lane.

Having just finished a reread of Thomas Pynchon’s Mason & Dixon, I was also reminded of this Rankin article.

If by any chance Mr. Rankin peruses this thread :grinning:, I can recommend a re-read. By far, Pynchon’s most humane book.

Hi-Fi Review was a good read. I’m glad I kept a few copies :grinning:

I used to work alongside Ian for a while in the early 1990s when he was assistant editor to Malcolm Steward on Hi-Fi Review and I can confirm he’s a really nice guy.

Back in the day, Chris Frankland’s “The Flat response” magazine had morphed into “Hi-Fi Review” and I used to shoot the front covers. Malcolm was the editor and Ian his assistant. As a long term mate of Malcolm’s and fellow Linn/Naim nut, I was asked to shoot the covers and worked alongside Ian, who was a big Linn Kan fan.

I remember the evening at an industry awards do in London’s Park Lane, Ian telling me he was going to leave the magazine and become a writer…didn’t he do well.
