Indeed, best not to believe everything ( anything?) on the internet.
I build them on their side and tip them up when assembly is finished.
Now that I look closer, I’m not even convinced that is a Kallax. The spacing of the uprights seems wrong (too narrow), but hard to tell for sure (and one is missing top left).
How about Besta as an alternative?
Doors are optional, but the boss of home decor does not like the look of the record spines.
Comes in a range of different units so you can configure what you want. Above is 3 different units with doors and draws.
What you see here holds about 600 albums.
IKEA Ivar being used by John Devore for his records. Reassuring that they can take the weight of this sort of collection. Plus, the collection can grow as more shelving can be added when needed. Perhaps he’s pointing to a Kallax rack that’s collapsed in the corner! Photo courtesy of Brooklyn Magazine website…

My wife got a few of these for me (also Ikea I think), for overspill from the main shelving…they seem pretty good and sturdy.
I have a couple of Kallax units and they are a good and inexpensive way to store lots of LPs. I haven’t seen many photos of collapsed Kallax units but those I have seen appear not to be secured to the wall using the brackets that are supplied with the unit. I think that some people must assume that those brackets are only to stop the unit falling forwards (which they do) or don’t use the brackets because they have a skirting board that shifts the Kallax away from the wall. However, the brackets also stop racking of the unit (i.e. sideways movement of the top relative to the bottom) when attached to the wall and I suspect that it is racking that eventually causes the catastrophic failure especially if the unit is tall and has a lot of weight towards the top (or on top of the unit). You could also address this issue by adding a back panel. Since I had the skirting board issue, I used nylon spacers of the correct size between the bracket and the wall.
They do look good, however can I be cheeky and ask what’s the make of the Dalek
that looks great - nice match for the room. and no bookends needed??
Ikeas’s website would suggest that the Ivar range is undergoing a substantial “revision”. IE most of it is not available now…
It was made by…Davros Inc Ltd, as I recall
No, no…j/k!
Product Enterprise Ltd 2002…
Radio controlled, looks around, and speaks…well, grates! He’s great.
Thank You a great photo, A Dalek is not something I actually need, but really want being radio controlled is even better, bet you have had a lot of fun with it.

Daleks have (traditionally) one weakness: stairs.
But we found out another, they’re none too happy on thick carpet…so it patrols the kitchen! When I remember to get batteries…
Used to scare the bejesus out of our cats when it first arrived.
Poor cats, The Dalek’s used to scare the c**p out of me when I was young, so can imagine the reaction of your cats.
Not going to rest now, till I have my own! this forum is costing me a fortune in music purchases…now add a Dalek
Found mine in Forgotten Planet…about £60-£70ish, but that was a long time ago.
Got a box of smaller Daleks somewhere, and the book by Terry Nation…Best Baddies Ever!
Apart from Alien…
That’s where I have seen them before, unfortunately didn’t buy one when I had the chance, got to Rectify that… along with a couple of Eagle Transporters…see what you have started
A good alternative to Kallax, if you live in the UK, is Shelfstore - they do very sturdy customisable wooden units and deliver nationwide.
I’ve got one I bought back in 1984 that is still going strong, now used for storing overflows from the main Kallax units.
Do the cats hide behind the sofa, like I used to do so?
DG…
@Maury_Finkle No, I don’t think book ends will be needed - as its just a narrow span and the uprights at either end will secure the records from falling over, but they will need bump stops for the back of each shelf, but an afternoon with some dowelling and a mitre saw will fix that.
@BigAl Ah, that’s a bummer if so. All the stuff on the current UK website (local to me) seems to be available, well the stuff I’ll be buying - just uprights and narrow shelves. Anyway, a few months yet before it’s all needed for my space, so may have to change plans if IKEA throw in the Ivar towel.
@TheKevster Ah, that looks interesting, thanks for that Shelfstore contact (bookmarked). Looks like a more upmarket, better made version of the IKEA Ivar stuff. I’ll have a play with their configurator, but I’d guess it’s going to be a little more spendy when compared to IKEA, but a good alternative.
The cats were always braver than me. When I first saw the Daleks (when the great William Hartnell was Doc), I was a sofa-ducker too…
