I am trying to understand. Why do you think unlikely Stream Unlimited would allow end users that access? I am not saying they would or wouldn’t, but I don’t understand what the picture shows about letting the end user have that access. Truly trying to understand the logic.
I was in a bit of a fiddling detox recently - but I can tell, that nearly all input changes gave a real difference (have not tried HDMI). And DB has done a wonderful job here with devotion and also transparency telling us his results. Why provoking?
I am really done with reading about „it’s all imagination“ …
Wow - spot on… in humor as well as with this one. ![]()
Ah, just an attempt at some humour on the topic. Having gone the best part of a year with drama over the firmware changes and the impact on sound quality, the next release is causing more controversy before it is even released.
Personally, I’ve been indifferent to messing around with the web client and I haven’t messed with HDMI settings as my version of the ND555 doesn’t have a HDMI input.
I just think it is very unfortunate that the hardware design has resulted in a situation where changes to the software dictated by a third-party can adversely impact on sound performance. As a customer, I would have liked to have known that before making the purchase, so it’s a dissapointing situation to arrive at. I‘m just hoping the new firmware gets the ND555 back to it’s best level of performance.
That might be a misunderstanding - StreamUnlimited WebUI is an integrated part of the product, just as for the Control App (basis of the Naim app) as depicted in their documentation. I was actually saying that I don’t think they will remove access to it.
So glad there are alternatives are out there, hard to believe people are still justifying Naim streamer ownership. What happened to pressing PLAY, sit back and enjoy.
With all the sadness there is still a big naim-heart
. And when nd555 is running well, it’s a wonderful streamer, playing front row with other fine streamers
Maybe they like things you don’t like. Hard to believe people have different tastes than yours
. People, for example, seem to love Magico speakers. At a hifi show in Toronto when looking for new speakers it’s the only speakers I hated. Go figure. ![]()
That’s not what he meant (I think) … it’s the devotion to it even with the long suffering period…
Constant fiddling, thats no enjoyment. I love Naim Audio and all it stands for, but for me at the end of the day, I want to press play.
I confess I’m not up to date with this, but if many products share common software features it will make a difference even if that hardware aspect isn’t supported if for example an ND555 is checking HDMI status only to be told it’s not supported - it shouldn’t do so in the first place.
Maybe it doesn’t and it’s the web interface is exposing options which are irrelevant for the hardware and on the device it doesn’t check.
Ideally, ditch the web interface options and just provide enhanced control in the Naim/Focal app for those who want to tinker, possibly with a basic or enhanced mode for configuration as a selectable option.
There are so many possible permutations for disabling/enabling this, that or the other I think it’s impossible for most users to do so objectively. Have a mode for those who have the time and patience to tweak (go for it!) but I just don’t have much affinity for tweaking things these days.
Good work Darkbear.
I can see little reason why these options shouldn’t be available in the app even it’s under a configurable basic/advanced configuration option provided the API for doing so doesn’t compromise security.
Years ago I’d have loved to try all these tweaks but these days I don’t have the patience to do so and expect the hardware to ‘just work’.
Yes, this is exactly the point. The only thing Firmwaregate really did for me was get back into physical media and using the ND555 primarily as a DAC and my CXUHD as a universal disc transport. Well, I’m finding physical media much more immersive anyway, so it’s okay.
The other issue here though, is that many are financially locked into their streamers and can’t take the $ hit with making a change.
Obviously if someone hears setting A set to off as better there is no argument - they hear it as better.
I have 4 different filters on my chord DAC and to be honest I don’t really hear any difference. Certainly none I could reproduce blindly.
So I’m definitively a bit of a sceptic when it comes to the differences people are hearing and I think most people would find some of the actions on here a bit on the esoteric side.
so I’m probably saying I have a little bit of sympathy with it all sides here but I do in the end feel that the lament for past departed firmware are a little bit overcooked at times.

I acquired my NDX 2 (on 3.8) not long before 3.10 came out. I instantly regretted updating from 3.8.
To be honest, if somebody told me that I was stuck with 3.10’s sound quality, I would have instantly posted the NDX 2 for sale. BUT, I have a lot of trust in Naim and 3.11 helped. Darkbear’s web admin settings did too. Honestly, bigger delta/improvement with the web settings than 3.11 for me.
I felt no need to fiddle with 3.8. However 3.10 and 3.11 demanded it. If 3.12 is a return to form, I’ll gladly never fiddle again.
It’s maybe a bit sad that Naim hasn’t chosen to make his own streaming platform. But saying that I don’t even know if it’s possible, in absolute.
Oh, that’s an eye opener. Now that you mention it, I noticed that the web-client has no Naim branding. Interesting. So, not all you see is Naim.
I hope they include insurance against hearing loss and back injury? 3868W, 32 speakers and 8 seat shakers ![]()
