Not strictly today’s news, however I read it today and compared with some other ‘hardship’ stories one frequently comes across…

Some story, and some man. My dad was also a navigator and retired as a squadron leader. He was still training in Canada when the war ended, otherwise there probably would have been no baby Bhoyo.

My father had an uncle who was in bombing command as a navigator, I think. He flew so many missions more than others, and then he got a bit messed up and refused to continue. He was going to be jailed, but someone bright realised that he could train new recruits for the remainder of the war. I know he got his wings, but not much else.
Those young men were brave beyound belief, not surprising the mind craps on your world now and then.

Like many who went through what they did my dad spoke very little of his wartime experiences, however piecing together the snippets he did tell us pretty much mirrors the 2010 film The way back, escaping from Siberia, after which he joined the RAF.

Wow, an incredible story (and pretty good film too). Kudos to your dad.

But surely you hold them chocolate side up, nibble a bit of the top layer, seeing how much of the biscuit underneath you can leave behind, and rotate?

Only by a small margin , but at this level …

Given that it is a PPV …

There have been reports in the last few hours of a massive wildfire burning in the Constantia area of the Cape in South Africa. Our very good friends are only just over the mountain from the fire and can now see it creeping towards them. Last time this happened, maybe five years ago, they had everything they cherished packed in two cars ready to leave, but the wind turned just in time. We are hoping to stay with them early next year. I hope their lovely house is still there.

In the meantime the very sad news is that the vineyards of Klein Constantia, which is one of my favourite Sauvignon blanc producers anywhere in the world are currently on fire. It’s only a short drive from their house on the northern edge of Hout Bay.

Not good . And too many wildfires worldwide. Fingers crossed no-one hurt and minimal damage.

Yesterday I drove down from Yorkshire to London. My cross-country route to the M1 takes me past a petrol station where I was going to stop and fill up. It was hazard taped off with a couple of cops outside, so I carried on and stuck a few litres in on the motorway rather than look for another place to fill up. Today I saw this on the BBC website, about 22 hours before I drove past.
