In Today’s News…

Almost all the ‘local’ press is owned by one or more of the big nationals. The level of journalism, at least online, is appalling.

People forget that the Guardian began life as the Manchester Guardian. Its journalism has always been great, even if the proof reading was always suspect

I always buy our local newspaper and pay for our online . Both were enormously helpful in local campaigns such as football pitches and CIL campaigns (where the council raised taxes unfairly)

Local newspapers are essentially dead at this point. Better to support your local democracy reporter if you have one. I pay to support mine. Worth every penny.

The news landscape has obviously changed beyond recognition since I left the UK 30+ years ago.

What is a local democracy reporter? I hadn’t heard of that before.

Look up the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Funded by the BBC. Reports on all the basic stuff your local paper cannot for lack of resources.

However, the BBC cannot fund one person doing everything so throwing extra money into the pot with a request to cover x because literally no-one else is has significant value.

For the well travelled geko?

Excellent. I saw a lizard scurry across my path this morning as I walked Louby Lou through the nearby forest.

Saw one yesterday, basking on the stile I cross every morning with Badger. I was too slow to capture a shot of it.

That’s very good. And yes, apparently the Guardian isn’t beholding to any large financial supporter that controls their news coverage.

£900 per annum, surely not.

It does sound like a lot. I won’t give money to any of the legacy mainstream media.

Yes, it does seem generous. But HH’s contribution allows others to have it that can’t afford it, I believe.
And I think the Guardian is mostly reader supported so their articles tend to be less biased, which is a good thing.
My knowledge on this topic is a bit sketchy tho, so it needs confirmation.

This is really interesting and a somewhat remarkable achievement to move such a large stone such a long way. Mind you, HSE wasn’t a thing back then….

In the news the WHO has declared a global health emergency over a new strain of the mpox virus that is more dangerous than previous ones.

At present it is confined to parts of Africa.
