Innuos stream 3 /Nds or 333/555dr

So to what era?
If you prefer listening to modern digitally recorded albums transferred on vinyl, through your lp12 rather than NDS , it may be because you prefer a more coloured sound.
But maybe it’s not the case.

I don’t have a TT any more but will readily concede a good one sounds more realistic and involving than digital for many things, including human voice. I regret selling my vinyl and Sondek. But not enough to buy all over again. However, I’d hang on to that Rega if I were you, Mr Rooster!

Happy new year!

Thanks Michael. Nothing decided yet. I will take all my time.
Happy new year for you too.

For the convenience of music discovery for me the streamer has it.. for listening pleasure, not withstanding the varying surface noise that comes with vinyl, my strong preference is vinyl for pretty much every other aspect of the sound reproduction. For me the tt unpacks the music in a way that easier to interpret and connect with..

From about 1980 to 2025 , I always prefer the LP12 for musicality ,groove and feeling.

When I listen digitally I tend to have a device near me and am often distracted and subconsciously start skipping tracks and jumping around.

When I listen to a vinyl album I tend to get more involved with the music and listen to the whole album….

That aside digital has moved on for sure but when I listen to my LP12 it has a certain “Je nais ce quoi” a sparkle that may not be as true as a high end digital streamer but is more enjoyable.

I wouldn’t want to be without my LP12 or my record collection - don’t buy many these days but I do love the experience of playing a record and will still buy vinyl from my favourite artists or really well recommended analogue cut.

FR, you are raising a very valid point and you have received very solid answers. In my case, as much as I like playing vinyl, mostly for nostalgic reasons, streaming has given me, and continues to give me much more than any other source, if I were to focus on vinyl or CDs, I would lose so much, just by failing to keep up with the latest music releases, and there is a whole world out there with new tracks being released each and every day, you literally skip one day, and on the next you find yourself with tons of new stuff. Of course frequently I go back to old recordings too, the ones that I like and will continue to listen to in the future as well, but again I prefer to just quickly find them in my library instead of playing them on CD or vinyl, if I have them on any of these formats anyway.

Keeping an expensive source just to have it on for an hour or so a month, which is approximately 10-20 hours a year, does not make much sense, unless you are attracted to it for a reason different than just playing music on it, nothing wrong with sentimental value, most people that are heavy into hifi usually are also attached sentimentally to one or more items from their system, but if you do not care about your Rega deck and you use it on (very) rare occasions, I don’t see a reason for keeping the funds from a potential sale locked and not use them for something that you will be using on a daily basis and you will probably even gain in SQ department too. P10, NDS & 555PS will get you a top flight streamer from numerous manufacturers with the latest streaming and DAC technologies.

Take your time FR re vinyl set up, some good counsel and it’s your call on sell up or keep - can easily see a case for both.

All things being equal I will have much more time on my hands and when I do I really enjoy playing a record on the old fruit box.

Thanks for your response.

I will buy later a second hand deck to listen very occasionally to it, to my around 100 lps i keep. Maybe a used Technics GR, or who knows, an Lp12 for about 2k max.

Have been using NSS 333 as a streamer into NDS 555PSDR for a couple of days now. Sounds beautiful but I continuously have a feeling of missing the NSS 333 + 555 PSDR presentation. Tomorrow it’s back and we’ll see how it feels. Then it stays like that awaiting the new software.

I’ve missed this thread seeetie. What are you trying to achieve? Better transport with modern functionality into the NDS. Why not a ND555 since you have the two power supplies. Keep it simple.

Okay, have read the thread now, here is my advice.

You like the NDS and 2 power supplies and retire in 7 years. Aim for finding an affordable ND555 in the next 7 years. Sell your Innuos and get a ND5XS2 to front the NDS. This will give you the functionality of the ND555 whilst keeping the sound of the NDS that you love. Swap out the NDS and ND5XS2 when you can afford a ND555 as your end game streamer.

Leave your record setup alone.

I have that idea before. But since @Dan summer thread, I don’t want it anymore, as it doesn’t raise the sound quality, which is my goal. Not have the functionality ( but it would be the ice cream on the cake).

So what’s your plan then?

After recently getting my Esoteric streamer/DAC I have had no desire to listen to my P10 as it is significantly better sounding. I still love vinyl and have no desire to sell off my analog rig but it’ll likely sit fallow for quite sometime. I would need something on the level of a top-spec Avid or SME to match my digital set-up.

Maybe a Primare NPS in the meantime, just to stream occasionally from Qobuz. ( cheap streamer to connect to the Nds). Some say it uplifts the local streaming too.
And one day buy an Nd555 second hand or 333.

Sounds like a good plan. I was going to put the Primare NPS on my old Uniti2 but a used Uniti Star came up, so went with that in the end. Same solution really, just at a different system level.

Good luck with a ND555 or 333 when the time comes.

Hi FR, are you able to audition a Grimm MU-1 into your NDS?
It’s not cheap but it is very good.

Best regards, BF

NSS333 + 555PSDR back in. With this setup Neotech 1008 sound bit to hard and metallic/pushy. I found it sounded good with NSS 333 as streamer into NDS. Maybe the synergy is better there then.

I won’t say there are any dramatic differences between (1) NDS + 555PSDR with NSS 333 as streamer vs (2) NSS 333 + 555PSDR. The later has bit better separation and “edge” and top end details. Bigger wider soundstage. More controlled bass as with NDS I can in my room feel the bass moving around but with NSS333 it’s very controlled and locked in. NDS with NSS 333 as streamer on the other hand has bit deeper soundstage, slightly bigger more warm bass but not a dramatic difference in my system. Maybe tiny bit more body overall. Some might call it added coloration. I think the thing that mostly catch your attention is the greater focus from 2 and more neutral vs the bit more laidback coloured relaxed presentation from 1.

Which one is preferred as always depends on room, speakers, music, preferences, and everything else in your system. I could happily live with both in my system. Will be interesting to see where the new software takes it, if anywhere. NDS will be kept with me and sent for a screen repair so I will get back to this setup later on when new software for NSS 333 is out.

It would be interesting to put an Innuos 1 or 3 in front of NDS. Someone else will have to make that trial though :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
