Interest in a Forum Factory Visit 2025

Great to see some “old fashioned” posts on here. It’s all become a little but too much Shunyata for my liking.

Interesting Clive. After studying the Southampton Road pics noticing the extra rigger and looking at the on-line spec sheet, it mentions an extra rigger is added to G20 and above!
I’ll take a look at an early printed brochure and see if it gets mentioned; late addition perhaps?

Isn’t there any room for some ‘factory nostalgia’?
The aerials have been there a quite considerable time with, iiuc deterioration with age and the likely difficulty in finding a rigger to do what is likely needed by way of not insignificant remedial work.

Thanks SJB. I’m beginning to think posting is like standing on deck in rough seas, never sure which way the next pitch or roll will occur or maybe get soaked by an unseen wave!
Recently posted on another thread, which asked for experiences; the. the opinions emerged. without any noted experiences!
I’m going back down the hatch!

Maybe, but I doubt many here are interested by this topic, specially non tekie ones.

I think we are mostly all here because of an interest in Naim, and as the factory is at the heart of that, I think that there’s definitely interest in the history, and any changes or developments there. The aerials have been a feature for so long - and also helped guide many first-time visitors to finding the factory, which is positioned right at the back of a trading estate and could otherwise be easy to miss.

Maybe they could put a pair of old DBLs on the roof instead. Or a spare set of Statements.

Yes please Richard

I would happily look after a spare set of Statements rather than spoil the roofline of the wonderful Naim factory with them :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks Richard, I didn’t realised the importance of the aerials in Naim history. Now that I am aware, could i say my interest in these aerials increased ? Unfortunately not, but each to his own.

Did you ever get an answer on accessibility, Richard?

Thanks,

Graeme

Not yet, as the person I asked was away and back today but ive been in hospital all day so will try to follow up this week.

Oh, sorry to hear, Richard. Thanks again.

Hope all’s well Richard

Count me in for a future visit. The first time I went was back in the 90’s courtesy of RPM. A wonderful day and Julian even joined us in the pub for lunch. Always interesting to see how the factory evolves over time.

FR the intro of the first Naim tuner as NAT01, was Naim’s first ‘source’, some years ahead of the first cd player, the CDS.

It marked a turning point in a sense, because up until then Naim was electronics only.

It is perhaps also further significant, that the NAT01 was introduced in the mid 80s, while Linn, having concentrated on their TT and early electronic offerings, didn’t offer a tuner until the early 90s. While the 70s and for a little longer, Naim (electronics) was the centre of things, with Linn with providing TT and speakers, for many a dealer.

Subsequently, as each offered further products, the (customer) options expanded. Worth a brief mention, that although none were at the eventual standard and ability of a NAT01, in the uk, there was a history of some excellent tuners from the 60s and 70s. The likes of Leek, Quad, Sugden and several more, all had excellent tuner units (at their price points). Until the cassette emerged in the mid 60s and then subsequently pre-recorded cassettes became available, the only source was tt or radio. R2R prerecorded tapes were never widely available, iirc.

So tuner came first, followed by the first main stream speaker - SBL - around two years later.
Reliance to some degree on Naim product history page, to refresh my memory, but @Richard.Dane will likely comment if that isn’t totally accurate. I suspect he always hoped the cassette player would have been an early source!

edit - a slight thread drift, but in the case of a factory visit, how products emerged from development and I guess many didn’t, to reach us, the consumer. So hopefully it is worth touching on the milestones and context of totally new products, now long ago, when development moved at a slower pace!

I’m fine, thanks Graeme (and gthack).

I’d also be interested, especially as this has a focus on the firmware problems and related communications

There’s no particular agenda Michael, it’s just a thread to gauge visit interest.

Sorry, I read

and merrily jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Thanks for clarifying. I’ve been on a factory visit in the past, so should not really be at front of the queue now, then.
