Internet Radio Issues

All done and everything went really smooth.
Well done Naim for sorting out this mess, none of their fault, and massive congratulations to @Richard.Dane for his professionalism in dealing with this minor “crisis” and for keeping his cool at all times. Kudos to you sir!

How does it sound? …… @trickydickie and all

Hard to be exact on this as not comparing a specific album track A/B.
I’ve limited myself to Radio Paradise (AAC 44kHz 320kbs) as it’s my music and I’m used to its stream.
It’s certainly not worse, maybe not quite the same, a touch more forward, more pronounced stereo.
Whatever, nice

Thanks Mike

I’ll update my NDS later today or tomorrow and report back. At least we can roll back to 4.8 if the sound gets mucked up.

NDS now updated.

It still sounds amazing to me. I may be jumping the gun here but to me it sounds a little cleaner with more detail coming through, it hasn’t lost that magical smoothness that the NDS has.

One issue I have is that all BBC radio stations I have tried (2 through to 6) only play for just over a second before stopping. This is for HD and standard streams. Playing the same through Roon via my Sonore UPNP bridge works fine as do my Muso QB 1’s. I wonder if @Stevesky has any suggestions?

Hi again, good to read you like the sound.
Further to my more forward and stereo definition last evening, I agree more cleaner and hasn’t lost that magical smoothness.
Remembering back to the good ol’ days of the extensive firmware beta testing, I recall we oft had differences of opinion between sound perceptions of NDS and NDX.

Re your BBC playing HD services that stops after a few seconds, my NDX doesn’t have this problem. My guess it’s at your end

A thought, have you tried a power off?
SU here all updated ok. However before listening it was moved, so power off. Been happily streaming radio since.

Yes it’s odd the BBC issue. It only happens on the NDS (Muso QB v1 OK) and every other non BBC station I have tried plays fine on the NDS.

Roon is also OK through to the NDS. In reality I’m more likely to use Roon rather than the Naim app but it would be nice to resolve the issue.

Hi,

I have updated my Unitilite to the latest software without any problems.

Stations broadcast in mp3 and AAC work flawlessly.

However, stations broadcast in HLS format do not work completely correctly.
For example, these are the following Polish radio stations:
PR24 - Polskie Radio 24
PR3 - Trójka
I observe the music playback stopping for a short moment on average every 12-13 seconds.

Hi again, I only use the Naim app, iPad and Android

One thing that might be something to add to the clues list ….
Something new on my system on this update is variable buffer %.
Most all stations fluctuate between 70% & 90%.
Whereas my BBC HD’s all get 100% buffer.

Maybe nothing but maybe just a hint to look at your BBC buffer number as a check.

Thanks Mike

I’m observing similar, most stations at 70 to 90% except for smooth jazz.com which goes to 100%.

The BBC stations rapidly reach 100% (quicker than the others) and start playing at 100% but only for a second before stopping and displaying the reconnect option.

I’ve rebooted the NDS but no change

For anyone interested I have identified what is causing my BBC internet radio issue with the new update and my NDS.

It appears that the Sonore UPNP bridge (used to stream music from Roon) and the BBC don’t play together nicely!

If I disable the Sonore bridge by setting it to another zone, e.g. a Muso I can successfully stream the BBC stations.

It’s very odd that this only happens with the BBC stations.

Confirmed, Stop the SonoreUPnP Bridge all BBC stations play.
Restart the SonoreUPnP Bridge and they stop.

Very odd.

So @Stevesky that explains the behaviour with the BBC stations, but doesn’t explain it or solves the issue.

@trickydickie good find

Richard, I have installed update 4.9 on my legacy ND5 XS but it is not clear to me if this update will enable Naim Radio by 14 Feb automatically or if another update will be required (which would then puzzle me why I was able to install fw 4.9 on my ND5 XS in the first place)? My device display is long dead and I hope that no manual interaction with the unit will be required as I can only use the Naim app to control it? Thanks

With 4.9 and the latest App update you should have the new in-house Naim Internet radio available to you now. Just be sure to remove your old presets in the App.

Thanks Richard - I can now see Internet Radio in my app. Its menu has 10 ‘directories’, 9 of which are local Australian and one is called Naim’s Choice, which then provides 9 different genres. Is the app now region-limited?

Probably a question best answered by @Stevesky

My ND5XS2 shows an ‘International’ category which allows me to browse for stations in any region.

No but it detects your location and arranges channels accordingly. It won’t stop you accessing other channels in other countries.

I followed your directions and deleted everything on favorites list. Then went back to internet radio and found a totally different list of stations to listen to. I clicked on 2 or 3 and they all worked. The problem now is that the station choices available are all based in France, which is where I’m living, and the options to tune into stations anywhere else, USA, UK, Japan, and anywhere else but France is no longer available. There are a few stations I put on the faves list but the options are limited. Previously I had jazz from Poland, KCRW from US and some UK stuff. BTW, I do use a VPN on the iPhone and iPad set to NYC but only French stations seem to show up. Any info or thoughts on this matter are greatly appreciated.
