iOS 18 - issues with M4 iPads and update withdrawn

I saw report where it affected M4 where user had updated to latest security (17.2.1 ?) update and then iPadOS 18.

Also new IPads being issued so serious bricking !!

So a little more info, for a new iPad Pro M4.
I managed to reset everything and this time opted not to transfer from a previous iPad.
At least the unit isnā€™t bricked!
Went so far and then had a window, which wanted to update software - pic below.

I always back up to iMac and donā€™t use iCloud for back up. No doubt to download data later, the update would still be required.
The unit had shipped with iOS17.4 and my 3 gen Pro was on 17.4.1, so hence I guess why the cable transfer method is available!
Configuring a new iPhone, I wonder now if software had to be updated when doing transfers?

Anyway, until Apple fix the issue, it is not possible to transfer old iPad to new - possible to use as a new unit, which wasnā€™t the reason for purchase. There appears to be no update or info, as to when a fix can be expected.
So it is going to be returned within the thirty day returns window with John Lewis, who had it on special offer.

Not that I had heard of it before now but looking it up it apparently describes a winding movement of one thing around another ā€¦ not quite sure how that relates to an iPad - but might be too early in the morning for me

oh dear ā€¦ someone must be feeling rather uncomfortable who is accountable for the QA on the patch release plan.

You have to have IOS software on the new device that is the same or later than the old device or backup etc.

If you were updating an iPad that was already on IOS 17.4, then you would now be offered a choice of IOS 17.7 or IOS 18. The default choice is IOS 17.7 actually.

So I reckon if you set your new iPad up as a new iPad with no reference to your old, then before doing anything else do a firmware update and choose 17.7, which works fine, then you could reset the new iPad and then this time it would allow you to fully transfer from your old one with 17.4.1

Then you could put it on IOS 18 at some time in the future when itā€™s all been sorted out.

I have an iPhone 16 Pro on order, and am planning to give my current 11 Pro Max to my eldest granddaughter who is currently using an iPhone 8. To be honest I hadnā€™t even noticed the iOS 18 upgrade being there, so still on 17.7

I wonā€™t be getting the new phone for another week, but I suppose iOS 18 will be installed on it. Hope it all works well. Think Iā€™ll book a Genius appointment to let them transfer my data etc and get them to put a new battery in 11 Pro Max.

My iPad Pro is on iOS 17.6.1. I donā€™t think itā€™s M4 as iā€™ve had it for about 18 months.

The latest MacOS update has b*ggered up Keeper Password Manager, alas, and I and doubtless many others, am waiting for Keeper to update their Mac app.

Picked my new iPhone Pro up yesterday from the Apple Store in Bath it was a bit busy ??

Even though they were busy they managed to book me a slot to update from my old iPhone 12 the new phone had IOS 18 on but surprisingly there was already an update for the new iPhone 16.

I tried that but it still hangs on update firmware, without a choice as you described, appreciate your thoughts. I had received it a few days earlier but lacked the opportunity sooner, to deal with it, otherwise I would have avoided the frustrations. No data lost, just a few hours. Info was scant at the start of the week, so returned for refund; will re-order for xmas hols.

Pot luck - will depend on when your unitā€™s firmware was installed ahead of shipment. Once that has been done, it will not be subsequently updated - thatā€™s part of the opening routine.

As the thread very specifically addresses, the issue is M4 iPads updates, rather than iOS18 ones!

Perhaps a different thread for iOS 18 updates @Dungassin and @pcd ?

I got an iPhone 16 Pro yesterday, but I havenā€™t set it up yet. My employer is changing their 2FA authentication on Tuesday and Iā€™m inclined to leave the new iPhone until Iā€™m the other side of that.

Always sensible also discovering that according to Reddit iPhone to iPhone transfer can take ages these days I donā€™t remember it taking long when I got my 13 pro max. Next year when I upgrade Iā€™ll see what time itā€™s being delivered and decide whether to do it that day or the day after.

See my previous post, I did the upgrade yesterday in the Bath Store the young lady said it might be a little slow due to the number of people using the wifi however it took about 45 minutes from start to finish iPhone 12 to iPhone 16 Pro this included a small IOS 18 update.

What surprised me was how quick and easy it was to convert to an
e-sim on the iPhone Pro 16.

Thatā€™s interesting.

Regarding eSIM, I thought I would avoid that because I am intending to change mobile provider from the terminally useless Vodafone to something else. I assume that if I move my SIM to the new phone, it will not turn it into an eSIM?

Is your Vodafone signal no good? I use Lebara, which runs on Vodafone, and itā€™s been very good. Iā€™d never use Vodafone themselves though.

Vodafoneā€™s backhaul is terrible and since they turned off their 3G network, even though they claim that they have a fantastic 4G and 5G network, I am now seeing Edge and even GSM occasionally as I move around the South of England.

Iā€™ve still got 6 months of contract to run before I can move.

Ah. I donā€™t know which service is best any more. When we were in France we got 5G all over the place, even on the campsite in a forest.

Yes I would have wondered whether my phone was at fault, but it worked everywhere always in France back in July and in the Cape area of South Africa in February.

The U.K. network is basically a bit rubbish.

David, when I went into the Store I asked a young lady about e-sims and she said t was much easier to change provider or tariffs with an e-sim.

I could not believe how simple it was, SIM card left in the iPhone 12 then when transferring data to the new iPhone 16 you are asked if you want to convert to a e-sim you then get a code on your old phone which you enter accept the transfer on the new phone and within a couple of minutes it is done. Reminds me to take the old card out of my iPhone 12 before I pass it on.

Thanks. Interesting. I will mull it over! The old SIM wonā€™t work anymore so it doesnā€™t matter if you do forget.
