iOS 18 - issues with M4 iPads and update withdrawn

Purchased a new iPad Pro M4 recently; first opportunity earlier to transfer from a 3 gen version.

Long story short - according to Apple tech support, iOS 18 has been pulled with a major issue.

Best advice for those with existing phones and tablets, this may or may effect yours; ymmv.

On a brand new iPad there is no ability to skip the update when setting up a new iPad, which has been hanging for six or seven hours. Hence here, the new iPad is inoperative until iOS 18 is fixed.
Their tech support have confirmed the same. Referred to the issue as a ‘big ticket’ one!
Does beg the question why Apple don’t allow a skip in the set up routine, but there.
Personally I do not do auto update immediately on release for this very reason, but I have some tech experience.

@Richard.Dane placed this in the streaming audio category, since it will affect the iOS app; if you prefer please move to Lounge, thank you

edit - see comments below - it appears the iOS18 issues is believed to only effect iPad M4 models!

I updated all my household devices (iPhone 15 pro Max, an older iPad which I use to control my Uniti Nova, my Apple TV) and I had no issues.

If you’re in the UK as I am, IOS 18 installed on both an iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro 4th Gen without a hitch……

Yet you would like to think it would install on the latest hardware, presumably for which it was designed, without any issue…….

iOS 18 seems to be working fine on my iPhone 12 Mini, as I updated a few days ago.

My iPad Pro 9.7 is stuck on iPadOS 16 due to its age, but as it still work well for the applications I need - Roon, Safari, Prime Video, YouTube, Netflix etc. it will be staying for a while.

My iPad Mini 2 has been stuck on an old iPadOS for years - it still plays Prime Video, Netflix, books etc. for great for travelling.

The issue appears to be affecting only the M4 iPad, I was on the Gold Master iOS 18 on the M4 and had no issues.

I read the same information for iPadOS18 and the latest M4 iPad Pros; all other devices (iPhones/iPads) should be fine (as fine as a .0 release is).

@sonwleo @PhilippVH thanks for that, I will amend my initial post - would have been useful if Apple tech support, who did engage, had remarked that it was withdrawn, as you describe, just for M4 iPads.
In the meantime, new iPad is too slim for a doorstop!
Thanks peps.

Not all M4 iPads Pro are affected: mine updated to iPadOS 18 without any problem. I mention the point only to reassure those who may have managed to do the same!

I don’t know if you have a Mac computer.
In case you have it, connect your IPad to the Mac ( you will see it in the Finder side bar) and updated to IOS 18 from there. I updated my IPhone XS 10 minutes ago using a Mac mini.
Hope it works :crossed_fingers:

Update iPad Pro M4,Iphone 12,Mac Mini, Home Pods and Apple TVs all running fine.

I profit from this thread about the latest IPad Pro to ask a question :

Is it possible to download hires albums from Qobuz on the IPad M4 without circonvolutions.?

Unfortunately it doesn’t - a new iPad M4 can’t use that route, received an error message, confirmed by Apple tech support.
Tried every thing I can thing off!

I’m not sure that circonvolutions is an actual English word. But it should be!!

Plural feminine noun according to Collins French-English dictionary, so likely Fr.
Interestingly, iirc, there are less French words than English words, by quite some margin.
Difficult to keep track, but welcome to a new one - perhaps for the forum!

I updated my IPad Pro M4 Monday at 6.00 pm without any issues thankfully. Went on to update 2 IPhone 13 and also IPad M2 without issue.

Given above I may wait a bit longer in future having “dodged this particular bullet”

I thought the English term was the same. It’s convolution . But maybe better, roundabouts.

Convolutions is a perfectly good English word. But yours was better!
