iPad- this cable- DAC V1…?
It’s mentioned here: dac-v1-nap100_brochure_english_v2_0.pdf (focal-naim.com)

It suggests a ‘normal’ cable might not work.
Only works with the camera connection kit in between. Did the same iPad to chord mojo. If I can find a printer usb cable I’ll try it iPad to dac v1.
Tried it. Works perfectly. Not messy. Just a little adapter for £10 ish.
Thanks, yes I’m pretty sure I’ve read this before, this route tends to lead to the Apple camera kit which is getting messy and putting yet another connection in the chain.
Really appreciate all of your input though👍🏾
For any „older“ Apple devices (with Lightning connector), there always had to be the camera connection kit or similar stuff in between Lightning and USB devices. There simply was no device with inbuilt (standard) USB. (Disregarding the full Mac’s.)
iPads and iPhones with USB-C port can „natively“ speak USB - so documentation from before 2020 or so (and 2023 for phones) will not know of these changes.
Ok, all of my Apple kit is current and has USB-C outputs, does that change anything re the DAC V1?
Can you use the iPhone now with your dragonflies etc? Do you have a usb dac?
Either it will work direct, or it will work via cck.
My iPhone has lightning and needs the cck.
I think @PhilippVH has found the key point - a lot of the forum information relates to ‘older’ kit with lightning connectors, so you need to read carefully to be sure both that you understand what’s being posted, and that the poster actually understood the original question…
I think it should work, and (trying to follow my own advice… ) I think others have found it to actually work.
But don’t get too far ahead - you still need to find a DAC-V1…
If you want to follow up on the home-network-without-a-fixed-connection idea though, google ‘4G router’
We are not allowed to link to amazon here but search up ‘personal wifi sim’ as an example, you will get loads of results. They are just little boxes, some even have ethernet, you bang a sim in and connect your devices to its wifi and boom you have connected devices and network. cannot attest to their capabilities of tidal, but if you can get one with ethernet and connect the naim that way then it might well be a good time.
I have one for work and they are fine.
Exactly such a product gives you a mobile enabled broadband service. For some that is the only way they can consume higher speed broadband services… with the future 5G SA roll out we will probably see these setups more and more often. Just ensure your mobile data package supports tethering, I think most do now.
Thanks for this info gents, I’ve looked into these, as far as I understand it, all I need to do is plug the box into a wall socket, and I’ll effectively have a router in the house, then run Ethernet to a streamer and play Tidal from my iPad to the streamer. This could well be the answer👍🏾
Having a home network opens up a lot of options, I realise I’m very late to this party!![]()
So, something like a Superuniti for example requires speakers, an Ethernet connection to a router, and an iPad…and that’s it? I can control the Superuniti from my iPad wirelessly and the Superuniti takes the full hi-res Tidal stream from the router?
I thought you didn’t want a home internet connection!?
Essentially yes, the iPad is just a remote control. The signal goes straight from the router to the streamer.
Note that the Superuniti will work with Tidal lossless streams, but only up to 16/44.1. It can’t handle 24 bit material except via the UPnP input.
I don’t really but it seems to be the best way.
Ok thanks, so does the Atom stream full Tidal hi-res?
And is there another Naim streamer option?
If you’re considering a 4G modem, I would suggest that you also investigate regular fixed line connections which you may well find to be cheaper, faster, and more reliable.
The 1st gen Naim streamers all support Tidal up to 16/44.1. If you want HiRes 24 bit Tidal (and Qobuz) you need a 2nd gen streamer. That means Muso2, Atom, Star, Nova, ND5XS2, NDX2, ND555, 222, 333.
Just to be clear Naim haven’t yet launched the hi-res Tidal functionality to those streamers.
Good point, but at least we know that it’s in the pipeline.
Ok got it, thank you buddy.
So if I go down the wired home network route and given my budget, it sounds like the Atom is the way to go.
My next inevitable question is of course, how does the SQ compare to an XS2 and my current DAC via RCA?!
Perhaps a new thread for this!
The SuperUniti is an excellent device (we have one in office) but it does not support Tidal Max, nor will naim update it to do so (being gen1).
We have a Raspberry PI providing Tidal Max Connect into SU via good quality hat and SPDIF - it sounds excellent.
