Iphone wifi setting affecting Naim app

For backround I use my Ipad to control my ND555 streamer using the Naim app. My streamer is wired with BJ cat 6a.

My router is located on opposite side of house from Hifi. So I wired from router a line to my Hifi room which I connect to a wireless access point (WAP). When I want to use my Ipad to listen to the Hifi I change setting on Ipad wifi to hook up to WAP in Hifi room. I have Naim app on iphone but never use the iphone to manage my Naim set up…always use the Ipad.

Lately was having recurrent problems with Naim app not finding my ND555. So like always I shut off router, unplug my ER switch and shut off the streamer. After reconnecting everything and rebooting the router it will usually work. This time the problem recurred several times, even after rebooting the system.

I did the network scan on the Naim app and it showed I had good wifi coverage and everything was ok. It always mentions to make sure you phone is hooked up to the same network as your App. I checked my iphone and saw the wifi on the phone was hooked up to the router wifi, not the WAP wifi. So I since shut off wifi on my iphone (which I dont really need as I have good cell service) and since then the Naim app works perfectly!
So it seems that my iphone set up to different wifi signal compared to Naim app was adversely affecting the way my Ipad Naim app functioned.

Does this make sense?

Regardless have not had a single issue with Naim app finding my ND555 since I have shut off wifi on my iphone and I am a happy camper! Of note it also works fine if I set the wifi on the iphone to match the WAP but I am leaving it off since not needed.

With a well configured network, you shouldn’t have to choose which device your ipad connects to, or change it, to allow it to see your streamer.

Does the WAP run its own DHCP server? It shouldn’t - you want the one on your router to control everything.

Not sure to be honest

Just happy working perfectly

@ChrisSU

I believe you are correct.

My WAP is running it’s own DHCP server , not being run by the router

Unfortunately I cannot figure out how to change it to where the router is controlling the WAP.

I logged on to the router but changing the settings to allow router to control the WAP is above my paygrade.

What router and access point do you have? There should be a setting in the access point (if its just another router) to turn off DHCP, or just allow “access point” mode vs “router” mode.

All of my wi-fi access points have exactly the same SSID, password and protocol, so wi-fi is seamless and simply roams to the best signal, nearest access point.

Only have one router issuing IP addresses via DCHP and you should be fine.

My computer guy coming over to fix the issue

Verizon router

Actually what your computer guy needs to do is not “adjust the router to control the WAP”, but rather your WAP should extend the existing WiFi network rather than establish a new one. So it’s WAP settings rather than router settings that he will need to alter.

Or to put it another way, the WAP mustn’t run its own DHCP router. The main router DHCP must be the only one on your home network.

Good luck!

The problem with some consumer grade networking devices is that they lack basic controls such as the ability to run or disable a DHCP server. If that is the case here, my advice would be to replace the device with one that is fit for purpose.

You may also want to disable WiFi on your router so that only the WAP does this. If necessary, consider adding more WAPs around the house to ensure consistent coverage. You increase the chance of this working smoothly of all the WAPs are the same, although this is not always necessary.

That’s one problem - ISP-provided routers often don’t have much in the line of customization options. However, DHCP should be handled by the Verizon modem/router - what AP are you using? Hopefully, it’s not a Verizon MESH setup…

It’s a UniFi AP Lite - it’s 8 yrs old and not a mesh set up @sktn77a

My computer guy suggested getting a new WAP and he is coming over tomorrow to set it up.

The new one I ordered is Grandstream GWN7665 at his suggestion….
