Is Roon slow?

Well it’s something more likely your end. I am at the in-laws currently using arc over cellular which is only just above 5mb/s here and it’s quick as at home searching.

Do you have to be connected to the internet for Roon to function properly with your local files?

Which Roon remote are you using? I had the same issue with Roon 2.0 on my Kindle Fire 10, losing connection to the i7 core at least. Not had dropouts on my NDX 2 though. I get no issues with an iPad or iPhone remote. I’m wondering if the Fire or Android implementation is not quite right, I intended to check disk space and open apps when this occurs but hadn’t got to it yet as the iOS remotes work fine. Depending on your remote, you could try the same? If not, log a ticket with Roon support and if you post a reference here I’ll also pour fuel on the fire with Roon :wink:

Since 2.0 yes you do. Although I lost mine a few times the other week and it kept playing. But they guarantee zero time in which it will function. I think the amount of time until it stops working is variable dependant on what your doing at the time. I think playback will carry on until the queue is clear, but navigation and searching won’t necessarily work. Some have lasted 5 hours before it stopped fully working.

No slow down for me, just as snappy as 1.8
Running Roon Core on a NUC with ROCK, same board as Nucleus+ with 16GB and NVMe PCI 3.0 SSD
Gigabit internet connection for any cloud interaction.
Local files on a NAS over LAN

If anything, Roon is even faster than it was, following 2.0

Roon CORE works best on a dedicated device using ROCK. No other operating system. No other processes. ROCK connected directly via cable to your router. CORE and remote both need to be the current version. Remote works best on a tablet, preferably an iPad of reasonable spec.

Any other arrangement works, of course, but is sub optimal.

Might be a little slower for me, but TBH would not have noticed without this thread. I have ROCK on an i7 NUC with 512GB SSD, so very over-specd.

Might be worth you clearing out all the caches and restarting the server before you try reverting to 1.8.

I also use a Nucleus, all good here! I do not really notice any slowness, in fact everything is better/faster for me with Roon 2.0 and Roon ARC.

I use an Intel i5 NUC running Rock and performance with Roon 2.0 is at least as fast for me as it was with 1.8 with both locally (Synology NAS over ethernet) and externally (Qobuz or Tidal) streamed music.

My library is relatively small with around 30,000 tracks.

Roon changed the Microsoft-runtime they run their software with. And it is a change to running on a completely different codebase (from the open source Mono to .net core), not an upgrade. So some things may be faster and others slower. This is normal. I would guess Roon will be optimizing the things that got slower.

I fear that you are right and that this is contributing a lot. But I am thinking it is a combination of factors. From what I see in this thread enough people are reporting a slowdown for it to be coincidence. I am thinking that whatever they did in the new software suddenly exposed hardware performance issues.

I run the Linux version of the roon core on a pc.
Just using an iPhone or iPad as the control device, it’s fluid and responsive, searches are fast and no errors are apparent.
If I run the roon software as a client on another pc with windows 11 then issues do occur; there are occasional stutters in the gui, like clicking play and nothing happens, and it’s generally not as fluid in operation compared with the iPhone/iPad app.

I host the Core on a Windows 10 machine.

But I use clients on both iPhone and Windows 10. Unfortunately both exhibit the behaviour.

And just as I was actually investigating what the cost en effort would be to go to max specced NUC and Roon Rock I once again had a total network failure on my Netgear Orbi during a Roon session.

I had thought this had been solved by moving my Core to my Orbi Router as was the outcome of a thread I started on the Roon forum on this subject.

So, haha, now the question is will new Core hardware solve this also or does it mean I will have to replace the Core AND my mesh wifi just to get Roon working again like it did a few months ago.

I am sensing that the end of my Roon subscription is on the cards. I really love the software, I do. But the cost and effort of maintaining the local server is starting to outweigh the benefit, I am afraid. I guess if I knew that spending X and getting Y would solve it all for me I would consider it. But this is starting to seen like an endless cash hole.

You really don’t need a max specced NUC to run Roon Rock and host the Roon Core unless you have an exceptionally large music library.

An Intel 8i5 NUC would be sufficient for most and could be obtained for not a lot of money.

Roon (2.0) works pretty much flawlessly on my mine and is definitely not slow!

Well I was thinking that, considering the price differences in NUC, going higher means a longer lifespan.

But, that said, the network drops caused on my Orbi by Roon traffic makes this all a non-starter.

You sure this isn’t a windows issue. You can pick up 7th gen NuCs for not very much or a gen 8 all that’s needed it won’t need more as the Nucleus is based on these if anything core will likely be a thing of the past at some point rather than your need better hardware. I admit having to spend to find out isn’t great. But windows does so many other stuff it often breaks with updates and it’s firewall causes all kinds of fun for zones and remotes not connecting.

The issue is that I have no idea at this stage what is causing the network issues. Beyond knowing it only ever happens when I am using Roon.

For all I know you could be hitting the nail on the head and it could be Windows. But I suspect that it is a combination with how Roon communicates on the network vs the Orbi architecture. There is a very real possibility that I will need to replace my mesh wifi if I change my Core.

As I cannot trace the reason for this in any logs so far or reproduce it faithfully and timeously it makes me reluctant to mess with a wifi solution that works for all my other needs. Work needs and such currently trumps my music enjoyment haha.

For example, this has now had almost three weeks of use since I moved the core to the Orbi Router and not a single drop and then today two again. So this will have me upgrading things, throwing money at it and then go for weeks and weeks before I have any idea whether it is actually fixed.

What exactly drops? The connection from core to endpoint or connection to core from a remote or both? In your Roon signal path what does it say for processing speed? When it drops out does this drop at the same time?
