Issue with 4k Blu-ray Players

I purchased a Panasonic BR player (DP-UB450EB) to play 4K discs rather than via the X-Box and enjoy the whole 4K experience on my new 4K tv. Sadly after around 40 minutes discs would freeze, and these are new discs fresh out of the box.

Called the supplier and had the player replaced with a Sony (UBP-X700) as the Panasonic was sold out, but the Sony was no better as the discs still froze.

I can understand that a disc can be faulty but not every disc that I play, and it is unlikely that each player is faulty, so there seems to be an issue.

Further investigation reveals that these discs are 100GB in size and multi-layered, so I wondered if the players are not up to the job.

Is anyone aware of problems getting these discs to play on £200 players? Am I expecting too much at this price point and need to invest a bit more in my player to get the benefit of these big 4K discs?

Thanks in advance.

One search later;
Clean the discs before playing
Turn off 4k upscaling and in cinema conversion select video not auto.

Thanks for the tip on player settings I’ll give that a try, the discs have been cleaned before being played.

Here’s the info;

Interesting stuff. Thanks guys.
I have played a good 50 discs on the Panasonic UB9000 I bought last summer. I have played DVDs, Blu Rays and 4K discs. Thankfully, not one problem so far.

I also have had problems with almost every 4k disc on my Sony x800 making me worry it’s on its way out . Bluray sails through .
I just this week bought 3 films and decided on Blu-ray versions due to fear.
Will look at settings and make sure upscaler is now off

Seems to be a complete PITA for Sony 4K Blu-ray Player owners to have to turn the upscaler off to watch 4K discs and have to then turn it back on to watch regular Blu-Ray discs and DVDs.
I would of expected much better from Sony than have that problem.

I have had a 700 for donkeys. Never had an issue with any disc. Perhaps there are just some dodgy jobbies out there?

Have you ever updated the firmware on the player?

My Sony X800M2 occasionally has a sound drop-out (cinema amp shows lack of audio stream via HDMI). Lasts up to about 10 seconds max and isn’t consistent about when it happens (not only with 4K discs either) so I haven’t bothered doing much about it yet. That said, it hasn’t happened for a while now (shrugs, touches wood).

I have discs that were good to start with and now gone bad and pixelate and freeze in certain places and are all in perfect condition. It’s not the player because it shows the same on my Oppo 205, Panasonic UB9000 and a Panasonic DP-UB820EBK. I have had no where near the problems with DVD and Blu-ray, i am now reluctant to buy 4K discs.

Note that the multi layer BR degrade faster and don’t lay the same 150 year claim as single layer BR discs with the average lifespan being 10-20 years and depended on storage below 23C and no extreme humidity.
