Yeah, now I think I see what you guys are implying…I’ve had no order acknowledgement or request for payment, so I guess I’ll give up on this order. I’ve put it on back order with Diverse Vinyl instead. Let’s see if they can come up with a copy at some stage in the future ![]()
Live at Maybeck.
A wonderful series recorded on a good piano before a small audience in fine acoustic.
Stanley’s music I always thought beyond my reach. Bit to ‘modern’. But here he produces a collection of known tunes with a fine use of all that the piano, his fingers and brain have to offer.
We often are only aware of these names comping behind a soloist or snatching one or two choruses of solo.
I Spotify now but sure it will be on the other services.
Another two good albums, culled from the 2024 “Best of Lists”. Both can be downloaded from Bandcamp.
Remy Le Boeufs, Heartland Radio, is a slick enjoyable album, almost on the fringes of “smooth jazz”. A nice relaxing listen.
Geof Bradfield’s Colossal Abundance, is another large ensemble album, that I can recommend. It takes a couple of listens to click.
Richard.
I have also found this brilliant album today, after reading the UK Jazz news review. It is going to be my next download purchase.
Me too.
Still on the Vinyl trail for Ellington classics, Diverse Vinyl came up with these two:
Frankly, this is disappointing on first listen. Not the production or pressing (MoFi Silver) which seem fine, more the music which I find a bit uninspiring on first listen. I’ll try it again another time ..
Fortunately, the Masterpieces disc more than makes up for it. The Analogue Productions issue of this 74 year old recording is incredible sonically and musically. Tremendous!
That’s my view too on Ellington at Newport, which is surprising really, given how well regarded it seems to be among music critics. I just find it all rather predictable. Ellington did so much better in other studio sessions.
If you watch the Newport Jazz Festival for this event perhaps on YouTube you will see and hear the storm that Gonsalves raised during Dim &Cresc. I think the lp was released on the back of this enthusiasm. Although I remember some wonderful Hodges in the suite.
‘Jazz’ by this stage of its life had become quite clinical and technical. The emotional response was being lost. Paul and his audience rediscovered it.
Interesting history of the Newport album here. Not entirely live.
Just downloaded SEED Ensemble Driftglass, after enjoying the more recent Cassie-Kinoshi album, Gratitude. This earlier album is very different, less orchestral, but very enjoyable, and gets better after each listen
Out of the London Jazz scene, I believe perhaps she is the amongst those with the most substance, beyond the hype. This a musician I will be keeping tabs on.
‘Pretty For The People’ - Is that a misprint “Kinney Dorham” - must be Kenny Dorham ?
