John Surman|Road To Saint Ives
The guy in my record shop had these laying around, and gave them to me when I said I was partial to South African Jazz. All three are enjoyable, especially Thale Makhene, who is a drummer/percussionist. McCoy Mrubata, sits at the more commercial end of Jazz in a Lee Ritenour / Weather Report sort of way.
I love the rhythm these South African musicians have. All three are a nice easy relaxing listen.
Mike Westbrook interview in the Grauniad - New music too!
Title track from James Allsopp’s new record Stars and Sand on Impossible Ark Records.
An excellent cover of I Shot the Sheriff by Trombonist Trevor Miles’ Plumstead Radical Club recorded in 2012 and released on Brighton’s Tru Thoughts Recordings label.
Like Dexter in his earlier years he never strayed too far. But all must go where their muse leads.
Ben,Hawkins and the underrated Bud Johnson. Roy keeps mainly within an earthly orbit.
For those not acquainted. Ben has the more breathy embrochure with occasional puffs. Hawk storms about always eager to fit in one more note. Bud between the two exhibiting his early bop leanings.
Jimmy Jones,Les Span,Ray Brown and Pappa Joe Jones.
The 2025 redoing sounds quite magical on Qobuz.
Going to see them tomorrow night weather depending.
Hope you end up going and report back I think James Allsopp is one of Britain’s best cross genre Jazz musicians responsible for beautiful renditions of standards like I’m a Fool to Want You and some very strange music with Scarla O’Horror, Sly and the Family Drone and lots in between.
His playing on Nostalgia 77’s The Loneliest Flower in the Village is excellent he also played on the Nostalgia 77 and Prince Fatty produced Last Poets LP. The quite weird rock of Snack Family isn’t really my thing but the straight up Jazz of the Dave Storey Trio is really, really good.
Thanks for the info Bob. I saw him a year or so ago playing the music of Stan Getz.
I just streamed the latest single Red Sky and really liked it. I’m deffo going as I already have tickets but was just concerned about local flooding but thankfully the heavy rain has stopped now.
Will report back.
Great have a good night. Here’s his quartet’s version of A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square from the excellent I’m a Fool to Want You LP released on Impossible Ark Records from 2016.
It was a limited run of 300 copies on vinyl and you can still buy an unplayed copy on Discogs for as little as £8 which is just ridiculous.
Another one from the Olde Tymes Appreciation Society.
It’s just easy going fun as well as a great advert for lung cancer.
Riverside/JazzLand/Plaza studio that captures Mickey Roker’s drums so well. Ron Carter is the bass player.
Qobuz.
Put this on shuffle last night. My god, he was great!
When I bought this, it was generally considered the digital version to own. Has there been an improved version?
He was even greater I feel when pitched against highly respected professionals. The 5&7 s were very competent N.O. Musicians.
Have you tried the sessions with Earl Hines.
West End Blues and Weatherbird.
Jazz changed,of course it did, but this was an early high spot.
They are on Qobuz.
This set includes those tracks.
