Blue Note have been issuing some incredible music of late. Almost a guarantee of something interesting.
I have TCTRT on vinyl but forgot to bring back from holiday so will have to wait for my next trip back to hear how it sounds on that medium but the stream is very good .
Sun Ra - Yesterdays taken from Solo Piano Vol 1 I own three Sun Ra records Supersonic Jazz recorded in 1956 The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra recorded 5 years later and Lanquidity recorded about 15 years later.
The first two are way ahead of their time, are melodic and where to me at least really surprising after listening to the much of his output which let’s be honest can be unlistenable to most Lanquidity is a lot more commercial and contemporary and like the others surprising.
But my favourite two Solo Piano Vol 1 and St Louis Blues Solo Piano are harder to come by.
Used to have this on LP. Awful pressing as I recall.
The Chick Corea Trio on a concert tour. Heard this live recording gem for the first time. Amazing recording, amazing music.
As Falls Wichita Falls, so Falls Wichita Falls, by Pat Metheny. I dug this classic album out of the archive today. This album was so far ahead of its time in the Jazz sphere, with its folk tinges, and use of electronics, back in 1981.
I believe this to be Metheny’s greatest album. One of the few albums I bought back then that I still play regularly.
RIP Ralph Towner. He died in Rome (where he lived) Jan. 18, 2026 aged 85. He had a great run and I loved his music, and saw him perform solo in 2016 and 2018. I’ve listened to his music since the early 80s First as a member of Oregon, and thereafter in career with ECM Records that spanned 50+ years.
No. I saw him a few times, and have some of his albums. RIP.
Sad news, RIP. I remember seeing him with John Taylor at the Pavilion, Bath International Festival, I think. That would be in the early 2000s.
Emma Rawicz, Gwilym Simcock - Big visit
Somebody has already shared this album on other threads, so I decided to buy it and it’s pretty interesting so far. Nice and clear atmosphere in the recording too.
It was me. The more I play this album, the more I like it Simcock is a wonderful pianist.
I saw him play with Pat Metheny live too.
Great, so I can thank you @Nigel1957 for sharing this great album. I played it all last night, but I need to explore it more in all its nouances. Both player are really good and it has a catchy yet delicate rhythm, the piano part is unique and distinctive. Simcock is surely one of the most intresting pianist I’ve recently heard.
I’m also glad I bought an ATC production (it’s my first), I was curious to see how they compare to Concord, Telarc, ECM, etc. The record is crystal clear, deep, present but also very natural to my ears.
Last time I saw Metheny was with Simcock on piano too.
That sounds interesting, is there an album where they play together?
you might also try to listen to the solo albums recorded by Lyle Mays ![]()
those from 1986 is really ![]()
I have! I have three of his solo efforts on CD
I enjoyed him more with Metheny.
