Interpretations of Monk - Various artists recorded November 1, 1981 at Wollman Auditorium, Columbia University, New York City. Originally released as a 4-CD set on DIW (Japan) in 1994. The recording was later re-issued in two 2-CD sets : Vol. 1 in 1997 & Vol. 2 in 1998 by Koch Jazz (US).
It was originally transmitted in 2014, after the missing reels had been rediscovered in Charles Chabot’s attic. Still, a welcome repeat on that short BBC4 jazz night. Just a shame that they didn’t have anything new to transmit - fresh Jazz 625 reels for example.
I keep hoping they will find and rebroadcast that live half hour of Woody Herman Orchestra from 1980/81 at Ronnie’s, where they were filming from literally right behind me. A bit like on the Ella film. I remember us being ‘trained’ on how to behave and applaud on the live broadcast.

Hi
Thanks for sharing.
I’m sure there must be tons of old 625 reels and footage somewhere.
I love that time in jazz where it was all real and super writing and playing talent.
Not some hoodie pressing buttons.
I remember being in the audience up here for a Tommy Whittle gig being recorded for BBCRadio Sheila Tracey educated a rehearsal for his first appearance on stage in a Tartan suit when the red light went on.
Sheila Tracy - yep, I remember her hosting the BBC2 Big Band hour but did a lot of other shows too. Knew her stuff. Took over from the excellent Alan Dell if my memory is correct.
Never knew that she was a trombonist with Ivy Benson !
Eric Dolphy - ‘The Complete Prestige Recordings’ : CD1. Most of the tracks on CD1 were released on ‘Outward Bound’ on New Jazz (the sub label at this point in time) in 1960 - his first under his own name and not quite as ‘out there’ yet, with a tight band!
This album is likely to become an unlikely top album of the year for me when I look back over the years music. It has just two tracks each 20 minutes long, which is usually a killer for me. But the hypnotic music carries me swiftly through the album.
Songs you might know the lyrics to… a necessary pre requisite according to Lester Young.
A beautiful burnished brass tone that is well recorded.
Bunch and Flanagan like a supporting cloud.
Chatty personality.
On Spotify.
I’ll have a listen. In my cd days I bought a lot of Concord recordings including some by WV but I can’t see those on Tidal, where, incidentally, WV has two entries - Vache and Vaché
Sonny Stitt: Tune-Up! & Constellation both from 1972. These are great recordings with Barry Harris (p) Sam Jones (b) Alan Dawson (drums, on Tune-Up!), Roy Brooks (drums, on Constellation)
Originally issued on individual Cobblestone LPs and later re-issued on Muse and Sony CDs. They have also appeared on CD 2-fers by 32 jazz, Gambit, Master Classics Records and possibly others!
The full albums can be heard on youtube.
