One of my favourite artists. Jazz is a pretty broad church these days. Everything that cannot be pigeonholed is my favourite definition.

New Jazz Underground – ‘Hoodies’ is my latest purchase.
This certainly is Jazz. These guys play and compose well. The music is pretty straightforward, but very enjoyable. This is an album that will make my “best of” list at the end of the year.

Another good album on Artwork Records: Lakecia Benjamin - We Dream. Good original Jazz that has moved with the times and incorporated modern musical trends.
Who said there is no great Jazz being made today?

Herbie Mann’s last record. It is more bop oriented rather than his previous fusion/world music. It’s an interesting mix of some Jazz standards and some Latin. There’s also a track with an accordionist. Amazing.

The Bill Evans Trio - Haunted Heart, the complete Riverside Studio Recordings (FLAC files). The sessions that produced the albums Explorations and Portrait in Jazz. The Plangent process is used for the audio restoration. Sounds good.

One of those wonderful ECM jazz records (by all means, I don’t like all ECM records). This one is outstanding, quiet, well suited for relaxed late night listening. Joe Lovano‘s saxophone play is breathtaking, reminding me of Charles Lloyd.

Three new entries this week. First off: Nduduzo Makhathini – ‘The Myth We Choose’
I like this vary varied album more than his last one. It gets better as the album precedes. Another contender for my best of 2026.
Your Brother’s Keeper & Gary Bartz – ‘Where Rivers Meet’. Another enjoyable album from the London Jazz scene. This is the Maisha drummer Jake Long’s new group and a slight change of direction
Both mix tradition with electronics and effects. Both strangely have a worn vinyl record effect on one track.
Members… Don’t! by Tyshawn Sorey needs a few listens before I comment
