At PTs.
Apparently it’s fine if you plan to use it as a transport only…
I know little about it.. just saw it at a competitive price.
Cheers anyway
£549 at the moment. The JBL separates seem to be heavily discounted at the moment, maybe about to be discontinued?
£249 more like.
Would be sad. The vintage modern look is appealing.
I think it’s fair to say JBL bits look nice but underperform at their RRP price points.
£549 for the turntable!
Apologies.. thought you were commenting on the CD player.
You say the price is too high for the results ?
Apparently. Hence, I guess, the discounts.
My dealer carries the full range and the turntable indeed looks lovely.
They haven’t been around very long. My dealer says for the budget end (talking pre discount) they are rather good. Their streamer amp sold rather well. And I can see why. It looks great.
AFAIK the electronics of this JBL range are based on previous generation Arcam units. The SA 550 amplifier is based on the Arcam SA20 and the SA 750 is based on the SA30. The rear panel layout is the same across the respective models. The CD player is less related to the equivalent Arcam CDS50 and does a lot less (no streaming or SACD support) but the original RRP was similar.
Yep, it seems like they dipped their toe back in the hifi waters, didn’t quite get it right and have decided it’s not for them. The whole series of products are no longer listed on their website for instance.
I remember the iconic JBL brand as manufacturer of great loudspeakers back in the 70’s.
Our local disco changed their (mismatched to disco)B&W loudspeaker to JBL 4333 - wow.
They even used the Citation amplication, was it 16 ?
Nowadays it seem modern to use old iconic Brands in marketing. Personally I’d never buy any of this.
I think that’s a bit short-sighted. The JBL Classic range is fairly respected and their proper high end speakers are absolutely serious bits of hifi though they will drain your wallet. They aren’t trading on past glory. JBL never went anywhere.
The fact is they make things from the extreme high end to the extreme low end and not everything will appeal to everyone.
I meant of course their cheap branded hifi.
JBL still makes home and professional loudspeakers but they are owned by Samsung who also own Harman Kardon, AKG, Revel, Bang & Olufsen, Mark Levinson and Infinity. Money have no frontiers!
