Joe Bugner RIP

Just read in the paper that the heavyweight boxer Joe Bugner has recently passed, age 75.

Most definitely remember seeing on TV his shock win against Henry Cooper and also the two fights against Ali where he went the distance. An under-rated fighter and fine sportsman - RIP.

Many never forgave him for beating “Our 'Enry”

Not many went the distance with Ali

All these years later I can still recall the shock and high drama on TV of that defeat of Cooper. I don’t think Henry ever fought in the ring again - it was a career of Brut commercials and shop openings ahead.

Bugner had a very long career in the ring - with that defeat by Frank Bruno in the late 80s. Quite a life, considering that he was an exile with his family from Hungary after the '56 uprising.

I remember watching burner as a kid he always seemed to be treated like a pantomime baddie but maybe that’s what comes from beating cooper R.I.P Joe ding ding finale round

Pity he got chased out of England after the Cooper fight and ended up here, he loved his Aussie Joe tag.

Joe really shouldn’t have won against Henry. Henry nicked it by a round or two. Harry C., the one commenting, thought so too.

However, he went on to be a great boxer. Very under-rated. He could take a punch no problem, from anyone. But lacked real punching power himself when against the top fighters.

RIP
