John Coltrane Draws a Picture Illustrating the Mathematics of Music

I think musical structures, rather music would be a better description. I would say harmony, scales, patterns and motifs amongst other things can be mathematically defined… and define the foundations of musical structure building blocks, rather than music itself… and let’s remember there are many musical scales and tonic structures across human cultures globally…

I would argue that music created by people is not about these relationships as such, it’s how you use or bend these relationships to express a musical story or poem, or a series of sonic shapes and patterns. The mathematical relationships define the vocabulary you use, not the music. After all listening to musical scales is usually not considered that interesting.

Kind of like a dictionary and a book of grammar is not an enthralling read… but using the vocabulary creatively and following an understood grammar can make the form interesting.

Sure over the ages people have wanted to understand how the foundation of music works, and that is where the mathematical relationships have been found… mathematics can be used to define and express most things in nature… humans like to take that predictability and adjust or play with it it to make something interesting.

In many European cultures, poetry was developed by the Celtic cultures as a form of story telling without loss or corruption, as in most Celtic cultures the written form was under developed say compared to the Latin culture. The same can be said when augmenting a poem to music… it helps retain and memorize the body of work.

not sure einstein had a quantum theory - other than that it was nonsense - looking carefully i see ‘quantum theory’ is outside the quotation marks so the authors mistake rather than the person he is quoting - this sort of thing is all to common in cultural theory (esp french) which too often tries to add a veneer of misunderstood science to what is often b*$$??!s

Indeed autophysiopsychic music is not about mathematics as I be,ieve is currently understood, but music from one’s self but using the vocabulary of defined musical building blocks (which can be mathematically defined)… from what I can gather from Christian and Muslim cultures.

Now there is a growing theory that our consciousness and memory operates, with recent research, at a quantum level… so ultimately there may be a relationship with autophysiopsychic music… but that will more about creating true artificial intelligence I suggest… and despite all the popular hype, we are a very long way from that… but I am kind of running out of runway on this topic, if not already… :grinning:

Indeed nature can be expressed in fascinating and beautiful ways when new artificial visual mappings are created, such as pictures of our universe

That’s some stretch.
Could you be prepared to provide some math sketches behind these suppositions ? :innocent:

Nice to see a completely standard A-level physics demonstration getting such breathless publicity. Maybe physics teachers should be applying for Arts Grants.

What next? Ticker-timers being touted as unlocking the connection between Newton and Camus?

It’s been said that JS Bach had a mathematical approach to composing?

Yep reminds me of the Nigel Stanford videos showing music waves with science, experiments and so much more.

Interesting. I certainly know a few people who I could describe as having “Schrödinger’s brain” :face_with_hand_over_mouth::face_with_hand_over_mouth:
