Large volume steps with SpotifyConnect on Nsc 222

Hi,

On my naim nsc 222 I have all of sudden large volume steps when changing the volume. It goes in steps of 4. Instead off one. Very annoying.
I experience this issue when using Spotifyconnect. Tried different phones and Spotify versions and its all the same.

I know it has something to do with the Spotifyconnect platform and the naim device. (The way they “treat” volume steps)

Please help.

Many third party apps have poor volume control implementation with large jumps from a short press of the button. There’s not much you can do about it other than using the Naim controls (app, remote or preamp volume knob) which should work normally.

Well you’re correct I can’t do anything about. But It has been a problem in the past.

So Naim can contact Spotify about it.When the tech guys want it to be good it can be good.

See:

You could contact Naim support, even though it’s outside their direct control there’s at least a possibility that they could take up the issue with Spotify and Apple. Don’t hold your breath, though.

Hi,

Is this on Android phones?

On iOS Apple and Spotify have been throwing toys at each other for months on how to do volume, Currently the physical side volume buttons bring up an onscreen popup which then shows a slider. This does expose all 100 steps but a bit crazy based on there are some perfectly good volume buttons on the device.

Typically we don’t have any control over this and it changes as Spotify modify their app which is auto-updated.

I decided to get rid of variable volume. Old school approach - manual blue velvet regulator on the integrated amp

Enabling variable volume in conjunction with automation, so that your Spotify app controls your amp volume, is imho a recipe for disaster. You are one fat finger error away from blowing your speakers. Has happened to many folks.

Yes on android phones.

My spotify app does not auto update. I’m using the same version for months now. And its all of a sudden. I triend the latest version briefly to test. But its the same.

So something changed on the spotify server side. (in the communication to naim devices) I think that when i change the volume within the spotify app with the volume up down button on the phone then this request is sent to spotify server and the logged in and playing device gets a message from the spotify server to increase or decrease the volume. I know this is implemented badly. Every device reacts differently.

Before my naim i had a Eversolo a8. For about one week. Also the volume step where 5 or 6 at a time. On the older naim nac 272 the steps where also large. But on the naim 222, nova it was always one step. Also on the bluesound node it is also one step. Maybe naim can reach out to spotify or something. I dont know.

Yes. Could be. For that reason i’ve set up the maximum volume on my pre amp very low.

Based on my own experience I guess this secondary control solution is to avoid pressing volume up in your pockets. Happened to me many times when only side button could control stereo output.

Not on android. Using latest version of Spotify right now.

Hi @Blackbird

Not by design. See:

It’s not quite as reported as Spotify had to do a lot of ‘creative programming’ to make those buttons works for Spotify Connect,

.Apple however are happy that Apple Music works ok with those buttons.

I have a Naim Nova and found the same, having said that its rarely I use Spotify as my go to is Qobuz which works perfectly with the Naim App

Ok. Thanks for the information. Maybe it gets fixed in a few weeks.
