Latest Gen Smart Meters - any issues?

Precisely my concern - very easily to alter a digital ‘reading’ in software.

Do they need to change this?

Very true I’ve had two sets of Smart Meters fitted and due to changing suppliers my last set no longer work.

Green Energy came to read my meters and I mentioned rhis to the lady that took the meter readings I was rather surprised when she said how many were like this she also said that her house is fitted with smart meters and her last gas Bill was £43,000 !

Hmm. I am surprised. I will enquire…

Is that really the latest update? I’m not sure whether posting this link is compatible with forum rules, but if you go to the Bulb energy website and look for the latest autumn 2019 update available on smart energy you get this:

https://bulb.co.uk/blog/autumn-update-on-our-smart-meter-installations

Basically in the south and central regions it is mostly ok and in the north it’s work in progress. The north region network is being built by Arqiva and they have had trouble getting it to work whereas Telefonica have sorted their network out in the south and central regions. That’s oversimplifying it, but is probably as much as anyone wants to know.

Anyway as I say, I will enquire.

And would anyone actually want their tumble drier to run when they’re in bed? Given the number of fires caused I would be surprised if people are comfortable with that, even if theirs is not one of the so-far-identified dodgy ones. And washing machines? Clothes crease least if hung up to dry immediately - I don’t iron most things, but would need to if left screwed up in the machine after washing - and the risk of colour run also greatly increases. Other than the dishwasher, I don’t think there’s anything else that lends itself to night-time running.

I’ve been to a couple of people’s homes where they have wireless smart meters, in one case in te kitchen, the other the dining room. Neither family takes any notice of what it says. If I had one I think I’d hide it somewhere, not wanting its unnecessary glowing reading. I can see that they might prompt changes for anyone who hasn’t given any thought to identifying key energy drains and trying to reduce them (more fool them), but otherwise I can’t see any benefit for the householder other than not having to sometimes send in a meter reding if estimates are wildly out - whether the identified disbenefits are significant may be a moot point, but I would resist having one for as long as I am able.

We use Bulb and the variable tariff interested me so I did some research into our energy usage and whether we would be better off with the variable tariff.

We have Owl Intuition to control our heating and also have the energy monitor as part of the system, it’s possible to download a spreadsheet with per minute consumption.

So on a rainy afternoon I analysed a typical week’s worth of usage and compared it to the Bulb tariffs on those days.

My conclusion was that even without any adjustments as to when we use things we would at least break even. We do stuff like washing and tumble drying in the most expensive time so with some changes we could probably save.

I have checked what was going on with Bulb.

They have now changed the wording on their website to reflect that although SMETS2 meters are compatible, Bulb haven’t finished the necessary changes to their billing systems yet to integrate SMETS2 meters with Bulb’s smart offering.

Anyway there is no reason not to go ahead with a SMETS2 meter install.
