Other than adding unsupported services to an older Naim device (a bridge lets me use Roon with my UnitiQute2), I fail to see why people are motivated at all to use an $800 streamer box into the digital input of a top of the line Naim streamer, versus the built-in streamer front end!
If you would be at my place listening to the difference you would understand complete The streaming section in NDS was old already when released. That’s why ND555 took its place using “same” streaming platform as Lindemann Bridge II.
Hi Blackbird, do you have any details on the modification for the Bridge, not much came up in a search?
I believe it’s added filtering on the DC input but I don’t have all the tech details. I’ve compared an original vs the modified version and the modified version is letting more information through. The mod is made by a local (Swedish) expert so I only believe there are a couple of units modified yet. I’m sure there will be more.
Same is carrying a lot of water there. At least in the spirit of fairness you put it in quotes!
I was wondering.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing.
Audirvana (upnp) into NDS must be one of the most cost effective upgrades one can make. Very good indeed versus native integrated services
I am a bit confused that some are referring to the nds as a machine with a vintage streaming board. Are my ears out of order? It sounds really good.
But I am using it for local streaming only! As I have mainly done with nd555.
Works really good or is it me not knowing what I am missing. I will try audirvana soon.
With Audirvāna it sounds very good IMO. Coherence, flow and something I could live with for sure. Modified bridge II takes it further for me. But I can understand if some stay there.
I believe the part that is problematic with NDS and streaming is it is under its capacity managing large streaming files and convert them. That’s part of why UPNP from Audirvāna sounds better since processing takes place on that computer. I’m guessing local files is in the same corner as Audirvāna and USB stick.
Large file as streamed from Tina and co?
So local files is less problematic as they are fully stored on the HDD?
Sorry - I am not into the technic stuff
If you issues with large file sizes on local streaming, it would be worth trying one of the digital inputs rather than uPnP.
My NDS work for me, with effectively local streaming only, from either a local library managed by Roon, Tidal & Qobuz with those streams marshalled by Roon and internet Radio managed by Roon.
Local streaming was what the NDS was build and optimised for and used in that way, works very well. Technology has not really advanced that much to warrant the “Legacy” label, just some addition ‘cheap CPU off-board horsepower’ to interface with the evolution of the streaming services. But then haven’t really advanced much in the last few years, to warrant any further technology investment outside of a NUC or a Bridge.
I have no issues at all! All is perfect - i am asking too much I think
That’s a valid explanation- thanks a lot
I am curious to read your feelings when the next firmware will be ready. Curious, if for local files only ( I don’t stream online), the Nd555 is really much better, or just a very little bit.
Dan found quite no differences.
Or even if i like its signature more…
I’ve started stocking up on popcorn
Trust that it’s the microwaveable version in the pouches. So much easier to store much larger quantities.
The problem then becomes, which microwave and mains cable /plug / socket, switched / unswitched, etc. to use to get the best popping effect
My, this Hi-Fi hobby is getting hard work.
DG…
Come on - think we need beer and popcorn for our feelings
Don’t stock too early. If the 3.11 is released in 2030, your popcorn will break your tooth.
