I had the Valhalla board fitted to mine, in October’82. It was relatively new then…
I thought it arrived mid-80s, but just checked on the Linn website and it was '82.
Yes, it was earlier than October.
Valhalla could fitted free of charge to decks built just before it was released.
Mine was too ‘old’ though… So it cost me £57-50.
FFW to 2021 and I sold the same Valhalla board, fresh from a re-cap, for £74-00…
I sold my defunct Valhalla (someone really wanted the original switch) and my Hercules replacement. I got decent money for them too - not that much though.
I sold two old motors too. It went a little way towards the £2.5k I spent.
All looks very nice, and the prospect of a new plinth and top plate looks interesting, but if you already had a keel, it probably wouldn’t be usable because its square corner would not fit into the round corner of the new bedrock plinth! so you need a new plinth, top plate hinges, power button and a new keel!!
Why presume bad, rather than good? And in any case, not resonating doesn’t inherently mean absorbing…
Is that what this Jony Ive is, of whom I had never heard before this thread? Apple products have a characterising sleekness about them. The picture of the anniversary LP12 doesn’t. But perhaps that’s because the mechanical LP12 design was sacrosanct, so only minor cosmetic tweaks possible.
I’m not knocking it, just making an observation about the outcome of using the supposed “world’s most famous designer” - for all I know the result may be the ultimate disk spinner for presenting the vinyl medium at it’s best, minimising its flaws, and maybe the new designer has improved some material aspect, albeit at a not minor cost.
A famous quote from @Innocent_Bystander I think you are kidding, right?
I assume that you’ve never heard of Mr. Jobs either?
Yes I’ve heard of Steve Jobs - very much so - but not this Jony person before today. But then I’ve never been into visual arty things, so perhaps that explains it?
It’s probably true to say that Ive is iconic in his field. One of the best known of a cast of characters who have made Apple the company it is today.
Whatever his merits or otherwise, Jony Ive is a very big name in the world of design and computing (the all-conquering iPhone would not be where it is without him), so it is a major coup for Linn to have him produce his vision of the LP12.
TBH, I was rather disappointed, as I was expecting something more radical. (Still, it saves me having to rush out and buy one - I’ll make do with the lovely NAIT 50 for this month!)
Yes, he did.
Jobs & Ive brought Apple back to life from near death starting with iMac, iPod.
I remember that I used to drive past the Apple HQ at Infinite Loop in Cupertino in around 1998/99, and I could not help feeling sorry for it, the big parking lot was almost empty with only 1 or 2 cars, one of which must have been owned by mr. Jobs himself. Look at it now, a company worth trillion dollars.
Possibly excluding the hinges - although I tend to remove the lid so they have never been an issue for me - I dislike every visual aspect of the changes. Very disappointed.
A special edition of AC/DC, celebrating their 50 years of activity, is being released by Atlantic Records.
The company is still in doubt about the name, options include AA and AAA. Solar Wind and Tidal Power were also taken into consideration, but Atlantic Records is being cautious about it, fearing the reactions of more conservative fans of the band.
Varta and Bosch are contending for sponsoring the event, while several makers of solar panels are also submitting applications.
Only a few parts of original AC/DC are being used, while the remaining ones are being supplied by a number of tribute bands, including Highway to Hell and The AC/DC Experience. Atlantic Records claims that this new edition will sensibly outperform any previous versions. Angus Young and Brian Johnson have expressed their satisfaction: ‘We’re ready to rock harder than ever’ said the iconic guitarist in an interview with magazine Power Handling’s reporter Gale Spark; ‘Prepare to change a lot of fuses’.
A wave of energy is storming through AC/DC’s fans all over the world. Electrified audiences are expected to attend the 50 concerts scheduled.
I’m very happy to see Linn celebrating 50 years but I’m not a fan of this redesign which to my mind detracts from the classic looks of this iconic deck.
To me the fluted plinth with an Ittok and Troika remains the pinnacle of Linn design/style - although I have never owned one I have certainly lusted after that!
I don’t want to open a can of worms, but I just read an article about the LP12–50 in the FT, which has this sentence in it:
‘Audiophiles talk about the “pace, rhythm and timing” the LP12 supposedly bestows upon music, but Tiefenbrun refutes what he calls “magic dust”.’
Just shown Mrs QS the picture posted above by @sean86 and she replied “I don’t like that! Your LP12 is beautiful, but that isn’t.”
She laughed and said “For That!”, when I told her the price😂
Yes for those that can afford the habit, I’m sure the enhanced senses had a profound effect on music enjoyment as well as other things
I don’t think I ever heard my wife say that any of my HiFi components was a thing of beauty, but then beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder
It’s a limited edition and so the ploy not to attract too many people has obviously worked
Looks like you saved a packet of money.
