Linn Adikt MM or AT MC for a Majik Jelco tonearm?

Hi everybody, I am new to this forum here. I bought a used LP12. It will be a Majik level LP12 with a Majik Jelco tonearm. I can decide between an Adikt (MM) or an Audio Technica AT-ART9XA (MC). Is there anybody out here who has experience with both cartridges on his tonearm? Actually I am not sure which one I should choose? Thanks for your help.

Cheers Jan

The Adikt is more suited to that arm.
The AT art 9 demands something a bit more and will be more costly to set up SUT or Head amp etc. :+1:t2:

I would use an AT MM on that - having had a few Adikts before, it’s good, not great.

If you have the funds for an ART9 I would suggest trading in the Jelco fo an used Ekos mkI from a reputable dealer. Should just about work out budget wise and will be a very significant upgrade.

P.s.: the above assumes you have already replaced the Majik PSU with anything better, such as even a Valhalla or a Hercules. If not, that shd come before the arm in your plans.

I really enjoy the Adikt and it works very well with Linn and vintage Naim. Was less happy using it with a Nait 50 but perhaps I just didn’t find the right speakers to bring it all together.

Adikt into a really good phono stage can be surprisingly good, but as mentioned above, any investment should go into the deck first.

Above is it new or used cartridges ?
Linn Adikt is a Goldring G1022 in new clothes.
If you haven’t purchased yet, some savings there.

The ART9 is likely a much more expensive and demanding cartridge.
Need MC phonostage.

More like a 1012GX

Jan, AKAIK one cartridge is roughly twice the price of the other. I would buy the cheaper one and spend the difference on upgrading your motor’s power supply.

When I started down the LP12 path I had that arm and used one of the Audio Technica VM95 family with great results. Went for the ML which has a microline stylus profile.

As others have recommended, the first upgrade was replacing the Majik power supply, in my case with a Lingo.

ah yes, thanks

Thanks guys for responding. I still own the AT cartridge and have an MC Phono Pre (TEAC). I also have a Dr. Fuss (German Specialist for Power supplys) Power supply for the LP12, that is far better than the Majik.

As I listened to an Adikt before it sounds really balanced and shows a really good all-in-all performance, especially in Rock and Pop. So I am thinking about buying the Adikt together with the Jelco tonearm.

Hi Jan, welcome to the Forum
The more I think about it now the more it makes sense to keep the AT and watch out for a good Phono Pre. :+1:
Cheers Michael

I thought there was only a two cart choice and the Adikt is most suited to the Jelco.
I’ve had one years ago with a different name on it but it still punches well above its weight and I’d rather have it than the Project or Krane that replaced it.
What AT cart do you have.

A query, in the initial question you have bought a Majik LP12, in the profile you refer to a pre-Cirkus LP12.
Is this the same turntable or you now have two?
If you have a pre-Cirkus, already have an MC phono amp, another step might be to get a Cirkus bearing and an AT33EV?

Thanks for all responses!

I actually own an old Pre-Cirkus LP12 where the above mentioned AT ART9XA cartridge is fitted. I will exchange it with a Majik LP12 (with a Jelco Majik Tonearm and the mentioned Dr.Fuss Power Supply).

I can keep my cartridge ior change it to a new Adikt. These are my actual thoughts

Keep the Pre-Cirkus LP12 ,keep the MC cartridge if it’s okay, go for a Linn Lingo if you don’t have one and after that a Linn Ekos arm.
Avoid the Linn Adikt it´s rather boring, the cheapest AT OC9 is much better for less money.

It’s worth remembering that back in the days before Lingo and Valhalla we were happily using the LP12 with the mighty Supex 900 MC / Grace 707 combo and getting a very musically enjoyable result. A good MC cart can work wonders on any spec of LP12 if the rest of the system is in tune.

And overpriced

What sort of deck/system were you guys using? I found it quite slow and boring on a Valhalla/Ittok deck which seems to need a K9 or modern AT to sound well balanced. The Adikt lasted just a week or two.

Yet to my ears it sounds really good with an early 2000s Cirkus/Ekos 2/Lingo 2 deck and similar era Linn system that it was originally sold alongside with. Adding a Uphorik provides some of the delicacy and finesse of an MC along with dead quiet background.

Pre Cirkus/Ekos2/Lingo 1 ,2 and 3/Naim boards . LP12 and Cirkus LP12/Ekos2/Ittok LV II/Lingo1 ,2and 3/Naim boards.
