Love the 272 please update - 1 click like post

You won’t ever get a 272 or any other pre amp/DAC/streamer device to sound as good as ND 555.

“We will have to agree to disagree there. I quite like the Uniti look …” I fully agree, but that probably just shows my taste in black-box aesthetics is rubbish.

Actually, I’d be very happy to forgo the unswitchable-off green Naim logo when I listen with the lights off – green just isn’t my colour! OK, OK I’m now hiding behind the sofa, as required.

Don’t put yourself down, it’s a very good look and you don’t have to dislike one if you like the other. I’m not bothered by the green Naim logo but prefer the old logo no matter how “old” it is. I do find the Naim logo and buttons on the UnitiCore a bit bright. I don’t tend to sit it the dark and listen very often. Usually low light though.

Yeah… the new look is quite cool…I could live with it…

As i go thru this thread, i feel Naim should update the Naim NAC 172 by integrating the Naim DAC into it…

and keep the price band to about GBP 2000 - 2500 .

regards

Having owned the Nac272 for a total of more than two years - I really don’t see what the big deal is.

I think the dac or the preamp - one of those things wasn’t up to snuff.

Beating a dead horse - but I was able to sell the Nac272 when it was still hyped, and buy a fully rebuilt Nac72 from AVOptions and a s/h Naim Dac and still had about $1K left over. The XPSDR I had sold previously.

I luckily still had a HiCapDR and a UniteQute2. This system (UQ2/NaimDac/Nac72/HiCapDR/250DR) kills the Nac272/250DR and even the Nac272/XPSDR/250DR (which I also had).

Here’s the funny thing: The three local ND555 owners I know - are all using the ND555 as a Dac - fed by a UnitiCore’s SPDIF with a Chord Music BNC-BNC cable. So much for streaming! They consider streaming only good for tidal/Qobux as a background.

I care less about absolute SQ and more about convenience and use the ND555’s streamer more. I use Upnp even though the SPDIF input does sound better…

Streaming tech is changing too quick. I’d rather have a solid Dac + Integrated (or separates) and let the transport be the thing that I keep rebuying. At $8500 the NDX2 is too dear for me to buy/update every few years…

Yeah take your point…but the beauty is in the balance with the 272…you can just have two boxes and have a capable flexible sound system with a headphone output…for allot people this is a game changer… of course then add a 555ps if you want and get truly great sound performance…mine was so good I used it with a NAP500 for a while…it was that good it let the qualities 500 shine through…

To add to what I said and to clarify - whether upnp or BNC sounds better seems to depend on a host of factors…

Interesting point MMky.

Especially about the core feeding the ND555 !

Chord music BNC cable is Not cheap. Blimey

Joined the forum community just to like this post and to remind everyone, including Naim of course, that there are some of us still running the 172 hanging around for an update too!
In the meantime I’ve upgraded from the back end, and my 172 is feeding a 250.2 and ProAc D20R speakers - sounds surprisingly good but leaves me wondering what it could sound like.
There is always a used 272, but I’d like to try Roon without having to buy additional hardware, and I hadn’t realised until reading this that the 272 can have problems with TIDAL, which is a bit surprising as my 172 is fine with it. Failing that I guess I’ll be looking at alternatives.
This seems to be a recurring theme, so I’m surprised that NAIM haven’t done it yet, which makes me think it won’t happen.
Fingers crossed then!

Amazing that a company isn’t able to provide a product that customers are demanding.

Is upgrading a streaming board so difficult ?

In any case maybe the Nova is a good indication of how an updated 272 supposed to sound

The Tidal problems referred to are usually all to do with the internet back to Tidal servers in a particular location. If the 172 works ok on Tidal for you then the 272 will just the same.
The 172 was updated last at the same time as 272 and the old streamers. Naim have recently confirmed that there are no plans to introduce any changes to the legacy streamers but will maintain the present functionality against external changes if possible.
Best

I’d hope it would be a hell of a lot better than that. If it sounds like a Nova it would be pointless.

Tidal’s been very stable on my 272 since I bought it 2 years ago.
And it sounds excellent.

I quite like the Nova

It means ‘no go’ in Spanish.

I had a Spanish 272 … the headphone outlet swapped the left and right channels … apparently there was a Naim fix available…

@Richieroo You are almost up to triple figures!

Please Naim, unleash the 272 replacement.

So that I will have plenty of used 272 to chose from for so little money on the second hand market.
