Even if stylus was good there are other factors affecting an old cartridge that might lead to record damage.
Personally I wouldnt be confident with any used cartridge that’s old in terms of years.
Some cartridge manufacturers, including Dynavector which I use, state that with proper care styli dont really wear out, other components in the cartridge such as damping rubbers, accumulated dust n dirt, cause a cartridge to deteriorate over time.
They even go as far to say that an unused cartridge many years old will have deteriorated
