Mac Display brings on motion sickness- has anyone experienced this?

I’m about to purchase a new Mac computer but need to buy a display the won’t make my wife feel nauseous while using it. We’ve had an IMac parked on our desk for a few years now and have pretty much switched to IPads because of the issue with the display.

My wife has worked with computers daily since they were brought into the workplace, the IMac is the only one that has had this effect. I don’t think it has as much to do with the size of the display as the method in which the backlight is modulated.

Has anyone here suffered from this issue? If so, how where you able to work around it?

Anecdotally a friend of mine feels his Apple Display has caused him migraines, possibly a similar sort of effect. What about a Mac Mini or Studio which have HDMI ports so you could attach any non-seasickness provoking monitor?

I’m planning on grabbing a Mini M4 and a separate monitor as you’ve suggested. Hoping to understand more from those who might have experienced this which type of displays help in alleviating this problem.

I’m not certain that it’s exclusive to the Mac displays or if it has to do with backlighting, refresh rates or some other combination that makes this occur.

I have a Mac mini M1 with 27” 4K Dell monitor. I have no issues with it at all.

I don’t notice anything with my displays. I use two 32” 4K LG monitors on a Mac Mini M4 Pro. I don’t buy Apple displays due to the unnecessary extra expense of them. Both my 32” 4K monitors cost less than one Apple 27” display.

Saw that one online- looks nice! Does the surface have the glossy glass like the Retina display or is it more like the standard anti glare displays?

Yeah- I’ve worked with computers forever and have never had this problem myself- but it’s a real thing here at home. We used to have a twenty some odd LCD that was branded as HP and it never caused any problems no matter how close she sat in front of it.

I like the LG stuff, we have those 4K’s all over the house and I’ve never heard a complaint about them- maybe that’s the ticket.

I’ve had my LG 4K 32” for about four years. I use it with my Mini, and also with an AppleTV for Zwift when I do indoor virtual bicycle rides on my stationary trainer. They have been a great set of monitors for me.

The model I have is 32UN880 from 2022. I’m sure it’s been replaced my newer models, but if I had to get them again I would probably buy the same in the latest model.

I’ve worked on computers for years, and have been all Mac at home for over a decade. I’ve never had this issue, so not much point in telling you what I have - you really need to here from someone with similar issues that has fixed it. Good luck
