Not entirely unexpected at 89, but still…
Just read this sad news myself. Another icon has left us.
Very sad news. She was a great actress and could really ‘inhabit’ her roles.
I was lucky enough to see her in her last stage play - A German Life at The Bridge Theatre in 2019. It was a one woman show lasting 90 mins where she played an old woman recollecting (and justifying) her days working in Goebbels’ propaganda dept. She was 84 and had no trouble managing the 90 mins. She was magnificent and a was a quite extraordinary actor. RIP
A national treasure has left the stage .
Very sad news
Tea with Mussolini… brilliant film.
Really a great: I like to remember her irony in Murder by death and Downton Abbey.
RIP
Very sad news. One of the very best.
We just watched Death On The Nile for a Maggie fix…
Very very sad news. There are two actresses that i have always dreaded hearing their passing. Judie Dench and Maggie Smith. I have fond memories of both, but in Maggie’s case in particular is her portrayal of Mrs Delahunty in “My House In Umbria” A fantastic performance and played with such panache and over the top at times, she was at least as good as any male actor of her time and better than the vast majority in my opinion.
Not sure why gender is relevant here?
A shame, but she leaves a wonderful legacy. However, that school of magic is running out of teachers.
Just watching on BBC catch up service Quartet with Dame Maggie and many other older veteran and excellent actors, all playing older retired musicians in a retirement home, Very emotional but also funny examination of old age. Well worth watching.
